IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Owning a house is increasingly becoming important to people than renting one. With the increased rent and easier conditions for bank loans, people do not find much difference between the spendature of buying a house and renting it. Nevertheless, I believe this is a positive development because having a house gives a safety and security in mind.
One of the reasons behind this development is the rising rent of the houses in last decade. Nowadays, people are paying more than double they used to pay just a few years ago. On the contrary, the conditions for loans from bank is becoming easier for buying a new home. In fact government of several countries are subsidising to encourage people to buy properties. For example, in Australia, a first home buyer needs only 5% of the total price of a house and the rest will be loaned from the bank. Although the interest rate is increasing, banks allows longer years to repay the money. Even though the property price is also increasing, with all these supports, residents find smaller gap between the rent and monthly installment. Consequently, they aim to purchase the house instead of renting it.
From a sentimental perspective, human feels safe and flexible at their own house. There is no tension of receiving sudden leave-notice and the hectic moving-out process. In addition, the house can be decorated and customised according to the choice of the owner, growing sentiment and emotion in the mind of the residents. Therefore everyone dreams for a house of their own.
In conclusion, people are tend to buy their own houses instead of renting because of financial and sentimental reasons. Although the property prices are increasing, the support from private and public organisation are motivating people to fulfill their dream of owning a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and clearly stating your position that this is a positive development. You present a clear overall progression throughout the response. Ideas such as rising rent prices, government subsidies, and emotional security are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the situation in Australia. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts of your explanation, which prevents the response from reaching the highest tier. To push further into higher achievement bands, you could ensure that every supporting point is thoroughly explored with even deeper nuance and perhaps a secondary perspective regarding the potential drawbacks of such a trend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. You make use of standard cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'Nevertheless', 'In fact', and 'Consequently'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct sections for the introduction, reasons behind the trend, sentimental perspectives, and the conclusion. However, cohesion is occasionally a bit mechanical or repetitive in how sentences are linked together, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as in the phrase 'human feels safe' or when connecting ideas across adjacent sentences. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could employ a wider variety of referencing pronouns and subtler transitional phrases that make the flow of ideas entirely natural and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary demonstrates an adequate range for the task, allowing you to discuss financial and emotional reasons for home ownership quite clearly. You make successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'subsidising', 'installment', and 'customised'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form that place limitations on your score. For instance, 'spendature' contains a spelling error, 'human feels' should be phrased as 'humans feel', and phrases like 'tension of receiving sudden leave-notice' are slightly unnatural in collocation. Additionally, expressions such as 'people are tend to buy' show minor lexical and grammatical word-form slips. To improve your lexical score, focus on refining word forms, ensuring correct spelling, and adopting more natural collocations common in academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your essay, utilizing subordinate clauses and conditional structures such as 'Although the interest rate is increasing, banks allows longer years'. You maintain reasonable control over your grammar, and the errors present rarely impede communication. However, there are several persistent grammatical and punctuation errors. These include subject-verb agreement issues like 'banks allows' and 'government of several countries are subsidising', article omissions or misuse such as 'from bank' instead of 'from banks', and prepositional inconsistencies like 'in last decade' instead of 'in the last decade'. To reach a higher grammatical band, you need to eliminate these frequent slips in agreement and articles, ensuring greater precision in complex sentence structures.
