IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Owning a home rather than living in a rented apartment has become increasingly common in many societies. This trend is driven by the fact that having one's own space to live leads to a sense of freedom and stability. However, the initial investment can create hurdles. I believe that this development is generally positive because it will enable people to earn more in the early days, so they will have savings for their home earlier, and the same investment can lead to future use as well.

One major reason for buying a home is that it provides personal space where they can live according to the way they want without any disturbances. Also, they can manage and design it according to their preferences. For example, we can decorate our place according to our needs and wants, but a similar scenario cannot be done in a rented home, where we have to live according to the landlord's rules. Money, on the other hand, could be used more initially to own a home, but it can also later generate income through house rent.

People will benefit from it as they will realize that buying a home could be their future investment as they will be earning through it in future. To an extent, the value of a house can increase over the years and can be a better investment for them.

So in this way I believe it is an positive development as it will help in future inc

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt partially, as it touches upon why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum, cutting off abruptly near the end of the conclusion ("an positive development as it will help in future inc"). While a position is stated, the arguments regarding financial benefits and personal freedom lack sufficient elaboration and clear supporting examples, which prevents a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization present with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief concluding attempt, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical, repetitive, or inadequate, such as the frequent reliance on simple transitional phrases like "Also" and "on the other hand". Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical flow between ideas is occasionally disjointed, particularly when transitioning between personal freedom and financial investment arguments in the second and third body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "initial investment," "preferences," and "future investment," but noticeable errors in word choice and collocation occur, such as "an positive development" instead of "a positive development" and awkward phrasing like "earn more in the early days." Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary limitations and occasional inaccuracies cause some slight difficulty for the reader and prevent precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples of errors include inappropriate article use ("an positive development"), pronoun inconsistencies in referencing ("where they can live... according to the way they want... we can decorate our place"), and incomplete sentence structures in the conclusion. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty and distraction for the reader.
