IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Possessing own home is more preferred than leasing one in some parts of the world. The reason behind this is, being owner of their own accommodation give people the sense of security and belonging. Although this trend has some drawbacks, it's mostly a positive trend.

In many countries, having own house is considered as an important life goal rather than simply a housing choice. There are many reasons behind this. First of all, owning a property is treated as long term investment and a symbol of financial security. Once somone owns their accommodation they don't have to worry about rising rent or being asked to leave by the landloard. In addition, home ownership can provide strong sense of stability, especially for families with children. In some culture owning house is regarded as social status of financial success.

There are few drawbacks too of this trend. People tends to put too much financial pressure on themselves to aquire a house. For instance, they take on unaffordable mortgages simply because society expects them to own a property. It can lead to extreme financial stress as well as can destroy one's mental peace. This decision can also limit their ability to invest on other oppotunities which could be benifical for them.

On the other hand, renting property could be a easy option for people who like to explore or have to move frequently for professional purpose as it provides great amount of flexibility. it also doesn't come with huge amount of financial stress so people can live peacefully.

Overall, i think home ownership is when it is a personal and financially realistic choice rather than social obligation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both why home ownership is important and whether this trend is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout the text. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the reasons for owning a home, such as financial security and social status, are well-identified in the second paragraph. In contrast, the exploration of the drawbacks and the alternative of renting in the third and fourth paragraphs feel somewhat more limited and lack sufficient extension. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to provide deeper explanations and more detailed supporting examples for every main idea introduced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic for each paragraph, ensuring the reader can follow the main train of thought. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate reasons, drawbacks, and alternative views. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or basic, relying on standard cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand'. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the final sentence where the pronoun usage breaks down slightly. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on formulaic links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating key ideas about housing, investment, and financial stress. There are deliberate attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'long term investment', 'social status', and 'unaffordable mortgages'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as writing 'possessing own home' instead of 'possessing one's own home', 'landloard', 'aquire', and 'oppotunities'. Spelling and morphological errors occur, although they rarely impede communication. To reach the next band, the student must expand their control of less common lexical items, refine word forms, and improve spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that the writer can handle various structures. Examples of complex clauses include 'Once somone owns their accommodation they don't have to worry...' and 'renting property could be a easy option for people who like to explore...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('a easy option', 'provide strong sense'), subject-verb agreement issues ('People tends'), and punctuation omissions like the lowercase 'i' in the final paragraph. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication. To progress further, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over articles and punctuation.
