IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is a famous saying "home sweet home", signifies the importance of a personal space where a person lives and relaxes. There are many countries where owing a home is prefered than a rented home. I think it is a positive development with many benfits which clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
On the one hand, an owned home provides a confidence and feeling of security to its owner. Moreover, individuals with a personal house has no axeity of paying monthly rent especially during difficult times. Furthermore, living in a owned house provides the freedom to live and renovate personal space contrary to rented facility. In addition, people with owned home can maintain their homes with little charges and even can use their extra space for renting out. Likewise, ecnomic value of a property continue to rise with time and becomes an important asset for future generations.
On the other hand, critics believe that buying a house or flat for merely living purpose, is a waste of money. A lot of cash is required for owning a house which is stuck in one investment, instead of being used for more useful purposes like business or education. Personal house also limits the opportunities of jobs and education for a family, as they prefer to live at one place.
I believe despite some setbacks, advantages and mental satisfaction is far more than disadvantages of personal house. A personal house is specially valuable in case of joblessness, poor health or old age.I have observed many homeless people in the streets of metropolital cities like Canada, who ones sale out their houses and now suffering on the roads.
In conclusion, I think the trend of owing a home has many positive aspects and everyone should has his own shelter to avoid negative consequences in case of financial crisis.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by exploring both why home ownership is important and presenting a clear position on whether this is a positive or negative situation. The main ideas are generally relevant, such as financial security and freedom of modification. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full extension. For instance, the counterargument regarding capital being stuck in one investment is introduced but not thoroughly explored. To reach the next level, the response would need to fully extend and support all ideas with deeper elaboration rather than relying on brief points. The stance remains clear throughout, meeting all requirements for a solid performance at this tier.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the reasons for home ownership from the opposing views and the writer's final stance. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive in transitions, such as the frequent use of 'moreover', 'furthermore', and 'in addition'. Referencing is generally clear, but smoother transitional phrasing and varied cohesive devices would elevate the structure to ensure seamless progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items and topic-related terminology like 'investment', 'renovate', and 'financial crisis'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, spelling, and word forms that prevent a higher standing. Examples include spelling 'owing' instead of 'owning', 'prefered' instead of 'preferred', 'benfits' instead of 'benefits', 'axeity' instead of 'anxiety', 'ecnomic' instead of 'economic', and 'metropolital' instead of 'metropolitan'. Additionally, phrasing such as 'living purpose' instead of 'living purposes' and 'ones sale out' show that while communication is generally maintained, word choice and collocation need greater precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting various structures throughout the essay. There are some error-free sentences, but a number of grammatical and mechanical errors persist. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors such as 'individuals with a personal house has', missing or incorrect articles like 'living in a owned house' and 'on the roads', and awkward prepositions or phrasing such as 'for merely living purpose' and 'everyone should has'. Punctuation and verb form slips are also present, such as 'who ones sale out'. These errors rarely impede communication, placing the grammatical control comfortably in the mid-range tier.
