IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In several countries, home ownership is considered far more important than renting property. This situation is mainly driven by the social status and financial stability, and in my opinion, it is largely a positive development despite a few potential drawbacks.

There are two primary reasons why people decide that ownership a resident is important than renting property. Firstly, property is widely regarded as a safe and long-term investments. Some people also have a desire that owning a home and a property, which is also described wealthy and reputated person in a society. Unlike monthly rent, which is ongoin expense with no fiancial return ,mortage payments allow individuals to build equity and acquire a valuable asset that usually appreciates over time. Secondly, home ownership also provides a strong sense of personal sequrity and autonomy. Homeowner does not have worry about sudden eviction, rent increase, or strict landlord regulations, giving them the freedom to redecorate or renovate their homes their living space according to their preferences.

From a socitical and individuals perspective, I belive this trend is mostly beneficial. On a personal level, owning a house give peach and satisfiction as well as offers emotional peace of mind and long-term security, which can serve as a safety net during retirement. Furthermore, home ownership fosters community stability. People who own their houses are more likely to reside in the same neighbourhood for a longer duration, leading a stronger social bonds and better maintained communities. However, it is worth acknowledging that the pressure to buy a home can lead to heavy financial starin, as a taking long-term mortagage may restrict an individual's mobility or fiancial flexibility.

In conclusion, the preference for owning a home stems from the pursuit of security and fiancial growth. Although it can place a heavy fiancial burden on buyers of the long term stability and social advantages it creates for individuals and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons behind the importance of homeownership and the writer's perspective on whether this is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Main ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing financial investment, security, and community stability. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalize in places, and some ideas, like the social status aspect, are a bit thinly developed compared to the financial arguments. The progression of ideas is logical and covers the required task requirements effectively, fitting the profile well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organization and overall progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into appropriate paragraphs, each starting with a clear topic sentence that guides the reader. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect sentences and paragraphs, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore'. However, there are minor instances of slightly mechanical or repetitive transitions, and occasional referencing slips occur, which prevent it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structural flow remains coherent and easy to follow from the introduction through to the conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'equity', 'appreciates', 'autonomy', and 'redecorate'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'ongoing' spelled as 'ongoin', 'financial' as 'fiancial', 'mortgage' as 'mortage', 'security' as 'sequrity', 'societal' as 'socitical', and 'strain' as 'starin'. While these inaccuracies do not impede overall communication and the message remains clear, they restrict the lexical score because of frequent slips in spelling and awkward word forms like 'reputated person'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and conditional ideas. However, there are several grammatical errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'Homeowner does not have worry', prepositional and structural awkwardness in 'ownership a resident is important than renting', and missing words in the concluding sentence. Punctuation errors also appear, particularly with comma splices and missing articles. These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical control squarely at this level.
