IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some metropolatin countries to purchase own home is considered beneficial than to live in a rental home. There might be several reasons behind this. The main reason behind this thought might be that own home gives the sense of autonomy and it enhaces the social and cultural status. I strongly believe that it is a double-edged sword. It offers both negative and positive aspects. This essay will discuss both aspects in detail.
The main reason behind the thougfht that own home will be advantageous is that it enhaces the social status in community. For instance, when a person buys a home, he is consider a wealthy person in the community and neighbours give them respect. Secondly, own home provides a sense od autonomy and the owner can renovate and decor home freely. Finally, it offers the sense of security and stability by providing loa stable place to love for long-time.
Although, there are numerous advantages of havinf own home, it also have some disadvantages. Firstly, the individuals will lose the flexibility to move from the place incase of any problem at that place. For instance, when a person has own home at a particular area, he has to live there for prolong period either he has issue with neighbourhood or the location. Secondly, if person buy home by lenting money from others, it will enhance the mortage burden. Ultimately, he will be bounded to stay there due to which he will not be able to relocate other area to build his future.
In conclusion, it is widedly considered that owning home is a better choice, and there several reasons behind this thought. From my standpoint it is a double-edged sword. While owning home brings various benefits, it also have some disadvantages. A person should take pragmatic approach to search the desired location to buy own home, it will help them to avoid the drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by exploring both why homeownership is important and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative situation. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas remain under-developed. For example, while you mention that owning a home enhances social status and provides autonomy, these points are supported with relatively brief explanations rather than fully extended arguments. To reach a higher level, you should expand on these supporting ideas with more depth and specific, well-rounded examples that fully explore the implications of homeownership.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the use of paragraphs is generally logical. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through your thoughts, such as using 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to structure your body paragraphs. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, and paragraph transitions could be smoother. For instance, the transition into the counter-arguments in the third paragraph ('Although, there are numerous advantages...') uses incorrect punctuation and a slightly abrupt shift. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and naturally without relying on rigid formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary choice demonstrates an adequate range for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as 'autonomy', 'double-edged sword', and 'pragmatic approach'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the essay, including 'metropolatin' instead of 'metropolitan', 'enhaces' instead of 'enhances', 'thougfht' instead of 'thought', 'od' instead of 'of', 'decor' instead of 'decorate', 'havinf' instead of 'having', 'prolong' instead of 'prolonged', 'lenting' instead of 'lending', 'mortage' instead of 'mortgage', and 'widedly' instead of 'widely'. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict your score. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision and eliminate spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct multi-clause sentences. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation that occur across the text. Examples include article omission and misuse, such as 'to purchase own home' instead of 'purchasing a home', 'he is consider' instead of 'he is considered', 'decor home freely' instead of 'decorate their home freely', 'provides loa stable place' instead of 'provides a stable place', and 'relocate other area' instead of 'relocate to another area'. Punctuation errors also appear, such as the misplaced comma after 'Although'. These errors mean your grammar control does not yet meet the requirements for a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions will greatly enhance your accuracy.
