IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries it is increasingly common that Individuals are owning their own home rather than renting one. There are several reasons why this trend has become widespread . In my view this is a positive development because own home can help individuals to save money instead of paying rent every month, and use it in other positive activities.

There are several reasons, why owning house has become inscreasingly common. On of the main reason is that individuals may want to live and maintain thier own house rather than a rental one. People are think about their future. For example, if a perosn living on rental house and paying rent on every month, and also working on the daily wages. Due to health issues they may lose their job and they can not afford to pay thier house rent. It can cause serious problems for them. Therefore, when they are physically fit and they try purchased or build thier own house so then can live peacefully.

I believe that this is a positive development. One major reason is that people do not worring about their future and thier rental expenditures. This is because people who work for daily wages are often stressed about thier rent, as of their income is spent on paying it. For Instance, a person has thier own house, they do not need to worring about their rental expenditure. Instead of paying the rent they can save their money and use it to fulfill other expenditures such as children's school fee, or paying utility bills.

In conclusion, owning a house increasingly common because it helps individuals to live in thier own house without worring about rental expense. Overall, i believe that this is a positive development becuase it allows individuals to save money and use it to maintain other household expenditures.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the reasons for homeownership and expressing a clear position that it is a positive development. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding financial security is touched upon multiple times without being significantly extended into broader economic or psychological impacts. The position is clear throughout the essay, but the supporting points, such as the example of daily wage earners facing health issues, tend to over-generalize and lack depth, sitting comfortably within the partial task fulfilment range where some ideas are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as the reasons for the trend and the evaluation of its positivity. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, particularly with transitional phrases like 'There are several reasons' and 'One major reason'. Referencing can also be slightly unclear at times, such as in the phrase 'as of their income is spent', which disrupts the logical flow between sentences. The overall progression is discernible, making the logical organisation adequate for a clear middle band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'widespread development' and 'rental expenditures'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'insreasingly', 'perosn', 'living on rental house', and 'try purchased', along with frequent issues with word forms like 'worring'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips are noticeable and occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, though communication is generally maintained, placing this criterion right at the target band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('People are think', 'a person has thier own house, they do not need'), misuse of prepositions ('living on rental house'), and article omissions. These frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader, reflecting a heavy reliance on basic patterns and limited control over more complex grammatical constructions.
