IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Owning a property is truly one of the significant goal in everyone's life. Many people wishes to have their own home, while a lot of people are convinced with the idea of renting out the home.
I am more lean towards the idea of owning a property because its not only positive development but also considered to be a advantageous factor in longer run. In my opinion, the primary reason which motivates people to own a home is to be financially secured, moreover it provides them with permenant stability as long as they wishes to stay there. By owning a property one can achieve the freedom and flexiblity to live in comfort, without worrying about the major hurddles like monthly rent charges or temporary contracts that comes with rental property.
Another crucial reason for people to own a property is the financial investment. The real-state investments are considered to be one of the best investments to have. Not only it has a good return on investment, it also becomes a safe and secure spot for your present or upcoming family or even generations.
Depending on the long terms goals, if people wishes to stay in the same city for a considerable amount of years, they are more likely to own a property rather than renting a space and living there. Furthermore, the goverments are also keen for people to have their owns homes which is why they introduce loan schemes. These Schemes offers flexiblity of loan repayments options over the tenure of 10 to 20 years.
Overall, I think it's better to own a property to have atleast one financial backup just in case if some unfortunate events occurs, a home serves as a

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why owning a home is important and giving a clear personal opinion on whether this situation is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout the text. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the first body paragraph touches on financial security and freedom from monthly rent, but the explanation remains somewhat brief. Similarly, the final paragraph trails off unfinished, leaving the discussion on financial backup incomplete. To move to a higher level, the ideas need to be fully extended and supported with clearer examples or deeper elaboration across all body paragraphs, ensuring complete and well-rounded thoughts from introduction to conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as financial security in one paragraph and investment benefits in the next. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For example, transitional phrases like 'Another crucial reason' and 'Depending on the long terms goals' are used, but referencing and logical flow between sentences can feel disjointed. Furthermore, the abrupt ending of the essay disrupts the overall flow. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between paragraphs and sentences need to be smoother and more natural, avoiding any sense of mechanical linkage and ensuring a fully cohesive conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's basic message. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'financial investment' and 'loan schemes', but this is accompanied by noticeable word-choice and spelling inaccuracies that stem from attempts at more complex terminology. Examples include 'significant goal' instead of goals, 'real-state' instead of real estate, 'permenant' instead of permanent, and 'advantages factor'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect a limited control over spelling and word formation. To improve, the writer should focus on precise word choices and correct collocations, ensuring that less common lexical items are used accurately and spelled correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting various structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples of grammatical lapses include subject-verb agreement issues like 'Many people wishes' and 'people wishes', incorrect verb forms such as 'I am more lean towards', and missing articles or pluralization errors like 'goverments are also keen for people to have their owns homes'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains generally clear and communication is rarely impeded. To reach the next level, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over grammatical structures, ensuring consistent agreement, accurate verb tenses, and careful proofreading to eliminate basic errors.
