IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There is an ongoing debate about whether it is cricial for people to have their own house or stay as a tenent. I think that it has a postive outcome to owning a home.

One major point is that, individuals feels safe at their own house. In brief, they have a access of their home keys and secure their belongings at a safer place like hidden lockers. If they live in a rental home, the owners have extra keys and they enters to their tenents place without any permission. Moreover, people can live happily live with their family without any disturance and enjoy every moments like dancing, listen songs on mini speakers, invite guests and late night parties. These activities are not possible for rentals because they live with their landloards and they restrict these kind of activities.

Another point is that, people can decorate their home according to their interests and latest designs. For example, some people renovate thier home after few years and change it according to their taste such as change the floors, cupboards and direction of rooms which is not easy for rental people. If thet want to do any kind of changes, firstly they get permission from their owners. However, taking money on interest from banks whenever they need money for their business and children's education because it is very hard to get money for others. So, they get home loans at low interest.

In contrast, owning house has multifarious benefits such as enjoy family moments and get finicial help form their own property.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and giving an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer mentions privacy and freedom as reasons for owning a home, such as being able to 'listen songs on mini speakers' and hold 'late night parties', but these points are explained with simplistic examples. Furthermore, the second body paragraph shifts abruptly into discussing bank loans and children's education without clearly connecting it back to the main argument about homeownership versus renting. The position is stated in the introduction, but the overall development remains partial and lacks depth, which places this aspect of the writing within the lower intermediate range.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation with attempts to divide the response into paragraphs, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are sometimes used, such as 'One major point is that', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast', but they are often mechanical or inaccurate, as seen in the concluding paragraph where 'In contrast' is used inappropriately for a summary. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the links between sentences within paragraphs can feel disjointed. While the essay has a recognizable introduction, body, and conclusion, the transitions between ideas lack smoothness, and the paragraphing fails to guide the reader through a well-sequenced argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic meaning. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, such as 'cricial' instead of crucial, 'tenent' and 'tenants' instead of tenant, 'postive' instead of positive, 'disturance' instead of disturbance, and 'finicial' instead of financial. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'multifarious benefits', but overall the range is restricted and repetitive. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and basic complex sentences. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar, articles, prepositions, and verb forms. Examples of errors include 'individuals feels safe', 'they have a access', 'enters to their tenents place', 'people can live happily live', and 'If thet want to do any kind of changes'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement also show frequent issues. These persistent grammatical errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader throughout the text.
