IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many regions, most of the people consider that purchase a house is more important rather than renting one. There are several reasons for this preference, including financial security and the desire for a permanent place to live. I believe that this is generally a positive situation, although sometimes it create financial difficulties.

The first and foremost reason why people prefer to live in their own home is that it can be a good investment. when people pay a rent, they are paying for accomodation but they do not become owners of the property. On the other hand, people who buy a house gradually gain ownership as they pay thei mortgage. In addtion, the value of a house can increase over the time, so it may provide financial benefits in the future. Another reason is that people feel more secure when they have their own house. They do not need to worry about a landlord asking them to move out or increasing the rent.

I think that owning a home is mostly positive. It can provide a stable environment for families, especially those with children. Homeowners can also make changes to their houses according to their needs.

Furthermore, after paying off a mortgage, people may have fewer housing expenses, which can be helpful when they retire. However , buying a house can also have negative aspects if people borrow more money than they can afford. A large mortgage can cause stress and financial problems if a person loses their job or has

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why homeownership is valued and stating your opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. You present relevant ideas, such as financial security, investment potential, and psychological stability, which meet the core requirements of the prompt. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, while you provide clear elaboration on investment benefits and freedom from landlords, your discussion of the negative impacts is cut short at the end of the essay, leaving the point about financial stress underdeveloped. To reach a higher standard, every main point needs full extension and balanced support throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the reasons for homeownership to your opinion on the trend. You make use of basic cohesive devices such as 'The first and foremost reason', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' to structure your thoughts. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, particularly in how paragraphs transition into one another. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate your arguments, but overall progression could be smoother. To improve, you should employ a wider variety of cohesive ties more flexibly and ensure that sentence-to-sentence links guide the reader effortlessly through your arguments without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating common topical terms like 'financial security', 'mortgage', 'investment', and 'housing expenses'. You also attempt some less common vocabulary items, although this is accompanied by some word-choice and spelling errors that do not impede communication, such as 'purchase a house' instead of 'purchasing a house' and 'accomodation' with a single 'm'. Other minor slips occur, such as 'over the time'. To achieve a higher score, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, demonstrate more natural control over word choice and collocations, and eliminate spelling inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as 'when people pay a rent, they are paying for accomodation but they do not become owners'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include missing articles or pluralization issues like 'pay a rent', awkward verb forms like 'consider that purchase a house', and punctuation slips such as the space before the comma in 'However , buying a house'. To move up, you should produce more frequent error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over punctuation, articles, and verb patterns.
