IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the 21st century, it is very crucial for many individuals to own a residencial property instead of ranting one and this practice is followed in many parts of the world. I would firmly believe that this is a beneficial change. The various reasons for my viewpoint are discussed further along with relevant examples.
Several factors combine to ensure that owning a property for ourself has many advantages. One of the primary merits is that the house is one of the appreciating assects. This can be understood by an investment perspective as the price of the purchased house will increase in future. This is to say that one could get a great amount of money by reselling it after living for a few years, which is impossible while living in a rental house. To illustrate this, many individuals buy house with the mindset of reselling it at higher price in the future. As a result, this could generate massive profit to an individual. Therefore it is more practical to own a house instead of living in a rental property.
Furthermore, being free from the financial burden of monthly rent is another merit of owning a residential property. In explanation, living in today's world is more expansive than the past and many people had to live in a rental property. This means that one have manage their funds every months to pay for the rent, which could be the most troublesome at the present time. For instance, many people prefers to own a house through a loan so that they can repay it on monthly basis instead of paying for a rent. In fact, it is better decision because one has to pay the loan for a specific period, after repaying it one could own a house. Hence, it is more advisable to purchase a house rather than paying for rents.
To conclude this discussion, spending a large amount of capital to purchase a house is a bad decision and could have negative outcomes. However, my belief is that it is easier to buy a residential house instead of living in a rental property throughout the life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and offering a clear position that it is a positive development. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on property as an appreciating asset is touched upon, but it lacks specific depth or examples beyond a generalized statement that prices will rise in the future. Similarly, the second body paragraph relies heavily on general assertions about financial burdens rather than fully exploring diverse facets of the topic, such as societal expectations or stability. To reach a higher level, the ideas need to be more fully extended and supported with richer elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as financial savings versus investment potential. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices, such as 'This is to say that', 'In explanation', and 'To illustrate this', which feel formulaic rather than naturally integrated. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the concluding paragraph where the summary abruptly contradicts the writer's previously maintained position by stating that spending capital on a house is a 'bad decision'. Enhancing the logical flow and smoothing out transitional phrases would significantly improve the structural coherence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's basic points, though the range is limited. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'residencial' instead of residential, 'ranting' instead of renting, 'assects' instead of assets, and 'expansive' instead of expensive. The writer attempts less common vocabulary like 'appreciating' and 'generation of massive profit', but these attempts are occasionally undermined by inaccuracies in collocation and form. To progress to a higher band, the writer should focus on expanding lexical precision, ensuring correct spelling, and deploying idiomatic phrasing more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally cause strain for the reader. Issues appear in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'one have manage', 'every months', 'many people prefers', and 'buy house'. Additionally, awkward prepositional patterns and awkward phrasing like 'repay it on monthly basis' detract from grammatical control. Punctuation is generally functional, but to achieve a higher score, the writer must reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips and demonstrate more reliable control over complex sentence constructions.
