IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In few countries buying a house instead of renting one has a significant value for individuals. People prefer to live in their own home due to privacy and comfort. In my opinion, although this trend offers certain drawbacks, its significant importance makes it a positive development.

To begin with, one significant reason is that people have their comfort and feel safe in their own house. Furthermore, it avoids monthly financial pressure on family's which is a extremely difficult in a renting building. For example, if people purchase their own home, they can decorate it and creates memories with it, because they know that its their permanent house and they don't have to leave it. As a result, family's can live a peaceful and happy life.

After that, individuals can create strong connections with their neighbors, because having family's own house creates authority and trust. Moreover, it can remove the fear of homelessness and due to this individuals can live a better life. For instance, people can start their personal businesses in the society owing to trust and good relations with the community. Another significant advantage is that individuals can sell their house in the difficult situations which makes it a good investment.

In conclusion, Although having their own home can have some disadvantages in terms of limited connections and long term commitment, its positive aspects are more significant. I believe this is a completely positive development with a numerous benefits such as comfort, safety and a storong connections with people who lives nearby.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and offering a clear opinion that it is a positive development. The main ideas are generally relevant, but some are slightly under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the discussion on comfort, safety, and privacy in the second paragraph touches upon important points, but the reasoning remains somewhat generalised without deeper extension. Similarly, the mention of selling a house in difficult situations in the third paragraph is a good idea that is stated rather than fully explored. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to extend and support all ideas more thoroughly, providing deeper explanations and more specific examples rather than relying on brief assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, discernible thesis and a logical progression of ideas across paragraphs. The essay is divided into appropriate paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on reasons and advantages, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always completely clear. For example, transition phrases like 'To begin with,' 'After that,', and 'Another significant advantage is that' are used, but the links between sentences can feel rigid. Pronoun referencing occasionally causes minor confusion, such as in the phrase 'creates memories with it' where the antecedent is slightly ambiguous. To achieve a higher level, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'permanent house,' 'financial pressure,' and 'good investment.' However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form that reflect a limited and developing range. Examples of these slips include 'in few countries' instead of 'in some countries,' 'family's' used incorrectly as a plural possessive instead of 'families,' 'creates memories with it,' and 'storong connections.' Spelling and word-form errors occur throughout the text, though they generally do not impede overall communication. To move up to the next band, the writer must use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, demonstrate better control over word forms and collocations, and eliminate recurrent spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'if people purchase their own home, they can decorate it.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('in renting building'), incorrect prepositions ('in the difficult situations'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('people who lives nearby'). However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the basic meaning remains clear throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences when using complex structures and exercise tighter control over articles, plurals, and prepositional patterns.
