IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several countries renting a house is not that cruicial than having a home to yourself. House is an valuable asset and protects you from rising rents, thougout your life. Owning a house is a good option as it is seen as a milestone for adulthood.

Owning a home provides long-term financial security, whereas renting means paying money to a landlord indefinitely. Given that people are in favour of owning a house as it protects people from rising rents, you get a permanent residence. You don't have to spent half of your pay on rents. It also prrotects you from landlord disrupts.

Another reason of preferring to own a house might be family pressure, people facing finnacial issue and having a very small place to life in. Also it is cultural expectation, that you have to own a house to get a respectuful reputation in the society.

In my opinion owning a house is a positive situation, as having a house to yourself can bring financial independence amoung old people, individuals owing a house can have a stable family life and better environement for children, also encourages saving and financial discipline. It plays an imprtant role in boosting the construction sector and economy. While all of these factors are advantageous, owning a home can lead to long-term debt (mortgage)

In conclusion, family pressure ,escaping paying rents, and landlords disrupts are the leading factors of buying a house rather then renting a house. It is a positive situation as after some period after the installments are paid you get a finacial freedom from the perspective of giving rents monthy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and giving a clear opinion on whether this is a positive or negative situation. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering financial security, cultural expectations, and economic impacts, which meets the requirements of the lower threshold and shows elements of further development. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or briefly stated, such as family pressure and financial issues in the third paragraph, which lack extended supporting details. Additionally, the exploration of the negative aspect—long-term debt—is introduced quickly at the end of the fourth paragraph without being fully integrated or expanded. Despite these minor limitations in depth for certain points, the overall response provides a clear position and maintains focus on the prompt throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs addressing different facets of the topic, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are generally presented in a logical sequence, such as moving from financial security to cultural reasons, and finally to an evaluation of the situation. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For instance, referencing is not always clear, and some transitional links are abrupt, such as the sudden shift into the economic benefits in the fourth paragraph ('It plays an imprtant role in boosting the construction sector and economy') without a smooth connective phrase. Paragraphing is utilised, though paragraph breaks and internal transitions could be managed more skillfully to enhance the flow and logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'financial independence', 'asset', and 'milestone'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the response. Examples of lexical errors include spelling mistakes like 'cruicial', 'thougout', 'prrotects', 'finnacial', and 'amoung', as well as awkward phrasing such as 'landlord disrupts' instead of disruptions, and 'respectuful reputation'. These errors reflect a typical profile where vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points, but frequent slips in word form and spelling prevent the language from achieving greater precision and fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'Given that people are in favour of owning a house as it protects people from rising rents...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that surface across the text. These include subject-verb agreement issues and awkward prepositional or structural patterns, such as 'is not that cruicial than', 'spent half of your pay on rents', 'place to life in', and punctuation slips like missing commas and run-on phrasing in sentences containing multiple clauses. While communication is rarely completely obscured, the density of these structural and grammatical inaccuracies keeps the control of grammar at a developing stage, requiring careful reading in places.
