IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
House is a basic need of every citizen. In many countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. I will disscuss this in detail in body paragraph.
To begin with, Many people prefer buying their own home instead of renting. The main reasons for this case are many. Independence, Many people want to live an independent life. If u live in a rented house u need to pay every month, the rent. Secondly you have to look after the house, You cannot even stich a nail in a wall without the permission of the land lord. The main issue is that the land lord can ask you anytime to leave the house, Which comes in the category of helplessness. Sometimes the land lords increase the rent suddenly to large extent and their u become helpless again. So to get away from this people prefer to buy Thier own home no matter how hard they need to go. But this not goes like this everywhere, At some places People get contracts signed, that specifies their time of stay and rent rates per month. If someone disobeys that, he would face consequences.
As per my conclusion, owning a home rather than renting one is a better and positive situation. It is much safer and independent in the way that u have a lifetime place to live and sleep comfortably for your whole life and even for your next generations. Therefore, i would say that it is a Safer choice and if a person is eligible and dicided to live at that place forever, He should definitely buy his/her own house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and giving a clear opinion that it is a positive situation. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the reasons behind preferring to own a home—such as independence and avoiding sudden rent increases—are introduced but lack extension or specific examples. Furthermore, the introduction relies on a memorized or copied phrase from the prompt (21 words copied from the task prompt were not counted), and the essay structure features an inadequate introduction that outlines the plan rather than setting out the main arguments. To improve, the writer needs to explore each main point in greater depth with well-supported arguments and fully develop their position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay displays some organization, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and paragraphing is problematic. The introduction is extremely brief, consisting of three short sentences that do not properly introduce the topic. The body paragraph is overly long and crams multiple distinct ideas together, such as independence, landlord restrictions, and contract agreements, without adequate separation or logical sequencing. Cohesive devices are used inadequately or repetitively, with excessive reliance on basic sequencing words like 'Secondly' and conversational transitions like 'To begin with'. Pronoun referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous use of 'their' and 'u'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure clear logical progression, divide writing into logical paragraphs, and employ a wider range of cohesive devices smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'helplessness' and 'consequences', but makes frequent spelling and word choice errors, including 'disscuss', 'land lord', 'stich', 'Thier', and 'dicided'. Additionally, informal or conversational language is used, such as the abbreviation 'u' and conversational phrases like 'and their u become helpless again'. To improve lexical resource, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, eliminate spelling errors, use appropriate formal academic phrasing, and ensure accurate word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, as seen in conditional or time clauses like 'if u live in a rented house u need to pay every month, the rent' and 'no matter how hard they need to go'. Punctuation is weak, featuring comma splices and missing periods, alongside inconsistent capitalization of pronouns like 'He'. Errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, particularly with sentence boundaries and basic agreements. To reach a higher level, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures accurately and maintain consistent control over punctuation and verb forms.
