IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some countries, possessing a home rather than leasing one is of utmost importance for people. I consider this a positive situation because this can be related to many factors such as self accomplishment, authority to do your own home etc.
To begin with, possessing a home gives you the feeling of self accomplishment. You are even more excited because you fulfill your dream in the era of cut-throat competition and sky-touching costs. For example, buying a home after burning the midnight oil satisfies you and motivates you for the future. As a result, you and your family are extremely proud of yourself.
Owning a house also gives you the authority to do your own home. There is no intervention of anyone towards your actions. For instance, a person designing the interiors of his house on his own without needing to ask anyone. Consequently, your choices are upheld and your personality is reflected through your house.
Furthermore, there's no scope of relocation again and again. When renting a property, you might have to move a lot considering the education or job changes. Citing an example, you might be living at a walking distance from your job but would have to relocate if the landlord doesn't wish to renew your rent agreement. As a result, the danger of moving out always lurks upon the tenant.
In conclusion, there may be different views on owning a home versus renting one. Considering all the negative aspects which make you bite the bullet, including increasing mortgages and rising costs, if you overcome these by working extremely hard and finally possessing your home, you feel self-accomplished, can do the interior designing on your own and the relocation danger is finally eliminated.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses both parts of the prompt by explaining why homeownership is important and providing a clear position that this is a positive development. Ideas are relevant, exploring psychological fulfillment, personal freedom, and stability. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. While the point regarding relocation is reasonably well supported, others, such as the authority to modify the home, rely on simple assertion rather than deep elaboration, reflecting the standard characteristics of a solid intermediate band. To reach the next level, the writer needs to extend and fully support all main arguments with richer details and more thorough reasoning rather than relying on brief examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct reason for homeownership. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Owning a house also', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader through the text, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical rather than fluid. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices connect ideas more naturally and unobtrusively, avoiding formulaic transitions that draw attention to themselves.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. There are successful attempts at less common and idiomatic phrasing, such as 'cut-throat competition', 'sky-touching costs', 'burning the midnight oil', and 'bite the bullet'. However, some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural or informal, such as 'authority to do your own home' instead of freedom to renovate. Minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the lexical control firmly at the intermediate level. Incorporating precise academic terminology more consistently and refining collocations would elevate the lexical score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'the danger of moving out always lurks upon the tenant' with preposition misuse, but these errors rarely impede communication and meaning is generally clear throughout. The punctuation is mostly functional. To progress further, the writer should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over prepositions and syntactic patterns within more sophisticated clause structures.
