IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries people have realised that owning a house is very important for indiviuals than renting one. And this is because people see it as a form of investment, having your own property, and a source of income and i'm of the opinion that this is a very positive situation.

People regard home as a place where can live in with family, friends, and loved ones. It is a place where all your main activities are being done before you step out for work, it is also a place where you get to raise your children or invite your parents over.

In my country here in Nigeria owning a house can be quite expensive especially if it's going to be located at the city, but it benefits you on the long run if you do own your place, because you are free from paying rent, having to change houses from time to time, and you have a solid investment to rely on.

For example individuals who bought houses within the 1990s at lekki island at a very cheap price because it wasn't developed yet, are all enjoying the fruit of their labour now, because the price of rent are very high, and buying of houses can be very expensive. The reasons for this is because they have being a new development going around the city like having the govenor house close to the enviroment or refineries around the area.

Owning a house might sound difficult for some people because it might not be easy to make a large sum of money to buy a house at the good residential area at an affordable rate, people might just want to rent a house from time to time , but this isn't sustainable enough as rent might have an hike in price.

In conclusion i'd advise individuals to try all possibe best to own a house as early as possible as it will be of help to their savings, investment and future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and clearly stating a position that this is a positive situation. Ideas are relevant, such as viewing property as an investment and the security it provides, which satisfies the requirements for a solid score. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack extension. For instance, the discussion on why home ownership is important leans on general statements rather than being fully explored, and the explanation of the situation being positive is somewhat repetitive. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to more fully develop their arguments with deeper explanations and more comprehensive support across all parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear position stated in the introduction and maintained throughout. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, such as personal reasons, economic benefits, and a concluding remark, demonstrating a basic logical structure. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in occasional run-on sentences and transitional links that feel slightly forced, such as starting sentences with conjunctions like 'And this is because'. Referencing can also be unclear at times. To move towards higher bands, the writer should employ a more varied and flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on repetitive structural patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'investment', 'sustainable', and 'residential area'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that prevent a higher score. Examples include 'indiviuals' instead of individuals, 'on the long run' instead of in the long run, 'govenor house' instead of governor's house, and 'have being a new development' instead of there has been. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips occur throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their resource and demonstrate greater precision in word formation, spelling, and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation that surface regularly, such as comma splices ('...renting one, And this is because...', '...from time to time , but this...'), missing articles, and awkward verb phrases like 'prices of rent are very high' or 'have being a new development'. While these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear, they reflect a limited control over complex syntactic structures compared to what is required for higher bands. To improve, the writer should focus on reducing punctuation errors, mastering subject-verb agreement, and ensuring greater accuracy when constructing complex sentences.
