IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is significiant for people to just buy a house then to rent a one in various parts of world. People choose buying their own becuase they dont have to pay rent every month and get charged by landlords for damages, as owning one can be a great expense but its worth a investment. It is a positive situation as it gurantees that landlords will decrease rent and never charge again for the damages.

The ones staying in rented houses have to pay alot of rent every month. When renting a house for a first time you have to pay alot of charges upfront, these are very huge amounts and many people have to take loans from banks or their close ones which increases the loan culture and they are unable to payback because of high rent they have to give every month. Homeowners dont care whether the renting family is middle class or low class, if they can even give the rent everymonth, but they just keep increasing prices every month. Another thing is if somehow the house gets damaged intentionally or unintentionally they would call lawyers on the people and force them to pay a huge amount of money and just kicks them out of the house unexpectedly. For example, in US in contracts it is written that rent will increased every month and the amount is not mentioned, but when the rented people recieves the text they get shocked to see that rent has gone up too much.

It is a positive situation to just buy a house rather then renting homes. This behavior of people buying their homes forces the landlords to decrease their rents very much as they are in loss if no one is renting. Another thing is they will also start no not take a hefty amount for minor damages. For example, everyone just bought their own homes the landlors will be forced to reduced their rates to half or even less.

In conclusion, owning a property is much more profitable and life saving then the rented homes. As it is a positive factor which will help the needy or middle class people get a home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main prompt by discussing why homeownership is preferred and whether this is positive or negative, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the reasons given for renting issues, such as landlords calling lawyers or rents increasing every month without notice, lack realistic support and border on over-generalisation. Furthermore, the position is somewhat repetitive, as the conclusion that homeownership forces landlords to decrease rents is stated multiple times without strong elaboration. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to explore more balanced, realistic arguments and fully extend their ideas with clearer, more credible examples rather than relying on extreme hypothetical scenarios.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation in the essay with distinct paragraphs, but it lacks an overall clear progression. The transitions between sentences and paragraphs can feel mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent reuse of phrases like 'It is a positive situation' to open new sections. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'The ones staying in rented houses' where the logical flow between sentences stumbles. While paragraphing is attempted, the internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks variety and smooth connectivity. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one without unnecessary repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice, such as 'significiant' instead of significant, 'becuase', 'gurantees', and 'landlors'. Collocations and word choices are frequently awkward or imprecise, for example, calling renting a 'loan culture' or stating that landlords 'call lawyers on the people'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from demonstrating a higher level of lexical flexibility. To achieve a better score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items accurately, and carefully check spelling and word forms before finalising the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic sentence forms with frequent attempts at complex structures that turn out faulty. There are recurrent errors in subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'to rent a one', 'get charged by landlords for damages', 'worth a investment', and 'start no not take'. Punctuation and run-on structures also hinder clarity in several places, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns, ensure correct article usage and agreement, and significantly reduce basic grammatical slips.
