IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Answer: Owning a home is very important for people instead of renting. it is a positive situation. In the forthcoming paragraph i will talk about benifits of owing a house.
Firstly if we own house, our rent expense reduces and this is very helpful in our monthly budget.
And we free from the stress of rent payment every month. Those who have to pay rent monthly, this amount fixedly deduct from their income. So it effect their spending and saving power.
Secondly living in a rented house people have feeling to leave this house any time. So owing a house give confidence of living. There is no fear of changing house any time. In a house where we live , we made some memories and attached to it. Then it is very difficult to leave a house anytime it effects emotionaly. So I suggest that living in own house give us confident in some scenerios.
Moreover , own house is our asset . It is valuable and benefits in every manners. For example if sometime a family faces a downfall in business , they sell their house and invest in business after settle in business they can buy it again. so i will suggest owing a house anywhere or any country we lived.
Nevertheless if we have live another city or another country for sometime or a specific tenure so renting is easy and cheaper way. Because for sometime buy a new house is very expensive.
Owing a house in very beneficial in every country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why owning a home is important and giving a clear opinion that it is a positive situation. Relevant ideas are presented, such as reducing rent expenses, gaining emotional stability, and building an asset for financial security. However, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated. For instance, the point regarding emotional attachment and memories is introduced but lacks clear expansion on how this directly relates to the importance of homeownership. Similarly, the counterargument about renting in another city is acknowledged but touched upon too briefly. To move to a higher level, all main points require fuller explanation and deeper support throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence through an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear. The student relies heavily on basic transitional words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover'. Furthermore, paragraphing is somewhat erratic, with very short sentences forming standalone lines, such as 'it is a positive situation.' To progress, the writer needs to use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without over-relying on basic listing words, and ensure that paragraphs are organized with clearer overarching topics and smoother transitions between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as 'financial security', 'asset', and 'downfall'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'benifits' instead of 'benefits', 'owing' instead of 'owning', and 'scenerios' instead of 'scenarios'. Some phrases also show awkward collocation, such as 'give confidence of living'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing lexical range. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary control, eliminate basic spelling mistakes, and use more precise word choices and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures with conditional and relative clauses. However, there are numerous grammar and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'we free from the stress', 'it effect their spending', and 'buy a new house is very expensive'. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to hold the score back. To reach the next level, the writer must exercise better control over basic sentence construction, articles, and verb forms to ensure a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
