IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.0)

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people but i think this is a negative statement because renting the home is equal to buy their own home .

However, when the people renting the home they have tu pay the rent which is in huge amount while when the people save the renting amount which they can own their nd home by their own money because i see lot of people very facing difficulties because they don't have proper job which they can pay the rent of the home .

Furthermore, the people who have their own house is in problem because they have to pay the bills every month the bill of water supply, electricity bill, garbage bill, gas bill which they have to pay some people who can't afford they make stallmemt of it and pay them every month when they have money

In my conclusion,i think renting the home is good way because people can also save money easily then in owning the house

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

First, it must be noted that the response contains only 158 words, which falls significantly short of the minimum 250-word requirement for Task 2. Regarding content, the essay addresses the prompt only minimally. The writer attempts to answer why owning a home might be important and whether this is positive or negative, but the ideas are extremely limited and under-developed. For example, the argument that renting is equal to buying or that homeowners face difficulties with utility bills lacks clear explanation and logical support. The position is unclear and confused, shifting abruptly between underdeveloped points without providing a cohesive line of argumentation. To move to a higher band, the writer must meet the word count requirement, expand fully on all parts of the task with well-supported arguments, and maintain a clear, consistent position throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The information and ideas are not arranged in a truly coherent manner, reflecting a lack of overall progression. While the writer attempts to use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'In my conclusion', their application is mechanical and often fails to create clear logical links between sentences and paragraphs. For instance, the transition from discussing rental savings to utility bills in the following paragraph feels disjointed and abrupt. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak, leading to run-on sentences and confusing referencing, such as vague pronoun use like 'which they can pay'. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure a clear logical progression throughout, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices without over-relying on basic connectors, and structure paragraphs around clear central topics.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a limited range that strains the reader's understanding at times. The student uses simple terms repeatedly, such as 'renting the home', 'own their nd home', and 'pay the bills'. There are also notable lexical errors in word choice and word form, including 'stallmemt' instead of 'installments' and awkward phrasing like 'the renting amount which they can own their nd home by their own money'. These errors and the restricted vocabulary prevent precise communication. To progress to a higher band, the writer must build a wider and more flexible lexical resource, use less common vocabulary with greater awareness of collocation and style, and improve basic spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of structures, consisting mostly of faulty attempts at complex sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions or relative pronouns. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing articles, and faulty subject-verb agreement, such as 'the people who have their own house is in problem' and 'when the people renting the home they have tu pay'. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences lacking appropriate terminal punctuation. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To move up to the next band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures, improve control over basic grammatical patterns such as clauses and verb forms, and significantly reduce the frequency of errors.
