IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries people prefer to have their own house rather than renting. It is everywhere, people have difference preferance about their living standards and it also depend on how much they earn and how much they can afford to live in their house.I believe that, owning a house makes much better living than renting one but it will depend on situation like where i am financially stand.

Firstly, i will discuss why people prefer to own their house than renting. People who have large family and mostly who are married prefer to live in house not to rent it because owning house is like you are the owner and you will not be worried about rents and maintance issue. Secondly, people use houses as personal property like when they will move to other city , they can easily sale their property to buy another one where they are going to settle.

Moreover, people who live in rental property have their own problems like, financial issues can be most common because of that people can not afford their personal house. Mostly, unmarried people live in apartments where they pay rents whule studying.

In my opinion, there are different perspective about owning a home and renting one, people who have enough money but still live in renting property which means they invest money in buisness rather than to bound their investment in buying a home. Although, people do not have much resources as well but, most of the people need to move from one city to another due to their duty so they can not stay at one place and they own renting property.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that families value ownership because it avoids rent and gives them an asset to sell, and you offer a view that owning is preferable in some circumstances. However, the position is not fully clear or consistent. The opening says owning “makes much better living,” while the conclusion also presents renting as sensible for people who invest in business or need to move. These points could form a balanced answer, but you need to state clearly whether the situation is positive or negative overall. Some ideas are relevant but under-developed: explain more precisely how ownership provides security or why mobility makes renting advantageous, and support these claims with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Moreover” help identify separate points. However, the overall progression is not always clear: the paragraph beginning “Moreover” shifts from problems faced by renters to unmarried students without explaining how this supports the main discussion. The final paragraph combines several contrasting ideas, so the reader has to work out how they relate to your position. Some linking is also mechanical, and punctuation around connectors is inconsistent. Organise the essay around a clear sequence—reasons for ownership, reasons renting may suit some people, then your overall judgement—and use references such as “this flexibility” to make connections between sentences clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “personal property,” “financial issues,” “investment,” and “settle.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make parts less clear or natural. For example, “difference preferance” does not express the intended idea accurately, and “bound their investment” is an awkward phrase for keeping money tied up in a home. “Maintance,” “whule,” and “buisness” also show inconsistent spelling control. Aim to learn common collocations for housing and finance, such as “pay rent,” “property maintenance,” and “invest in a business,” and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a conditional idea in “it will depend on situation like where i am financially stand.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “people prefer to have their own house rather than renting,” where the compared forms do not match, and “people who have large family,” which has an article and number problem. Verb forms and sentence construction are also unclear in “where i am financially stand” and “they own renting property.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly with “i” and spaces after commas. Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea, then add subordinate clauses once the basic structure is secure.
