IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Owning a house is very important for people in some countries like asian region, rather then renting one. It has more positive effects then shortcomes due to their root level environment.

People in countries like Pakistan and India have a different way of thinking when it comes to their private life. They always think for more stable basic resources like home and also they treat their land as something very sacred. Thats way they always prefer owning a home rather then renting. Also in this region, government is not taking care of basic needs of people like clothes, food and home. As a result of this, people are now more moving towards self sufficient life. Recently, a 3rd world country like Pakistan, emerged as a top importer of solar power plants and write now its biggest source of power is solar energy. This was only possible as a result of individuals owning their own houses and they shifted towards solar power rather than expensive on grid energy.

Overall, there are many positive effects of owning a house as it amplify the local construction industry which gererates employement at root level. Some people argue that this situation is causing multiple issues like contraction of available farm land but i think right now we have enough technology to cope up with this issue like by opting techniques like vertical farming.

In conclusion, owning a house in some countries specially in underdevelop nations is crucial for its residents as it gives them freedom and self sufficency.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain that home ownership is associated with stability, sacred ties to land, and limited government provision, then give a clear positive view. The solar-energy example and the point about construction employment help make your position relevant. However, some support is not fully explained: the link between owning a house and Pakistan becoming a major importer of solar equipment is asserted rather than clearly demonstrated. The opposing concern about loss of farmland is mentioned, but the response to it is brief. Develop the reasons more carefully and connect each example directly to why ownership matters and whether its effects are positive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, an evaluation, and a conclusion. Paragraphing generally helps the reader follow the main points, and phrases such as “As a result” and “In conclusion” signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. For example, the discussion shifts from government support to solar power without fully explaining the link, and “Overall” introduces a new argument about construction rather than summarising the preceding paragraph. The conclusion repeats the position but does not draw together the main reasons. Use clearer topic sentences and add transitions that explain how each example supports the central argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “stable basic resources,” “self-sufficient,” “construction industry,” and “vertical farming,” and these choices allow you to discuss social and economic effects. There are also noticeable spelling, word-choice, and collocation problems that reduce precision, such as “shortcomes,” “root level,” “on grid energy,” and “employement.” Some phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “more moving towards self sufficient life” and “amplify the local construction industry.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. A more precise range would help you express the relationship between home ownership, security, public services, and economic development without relying on broad or unclear wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “As a result of this” and a contrast introduced by “but.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “it amplify” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “people are now more moving” uses an incorrect verb construction. The sentence beginning “Recently, a 3rd world country…” also combines several ideas in a way that makes the relationship between them difficult to follow. Review agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, and make sure longer sentences have a clear main clause. Greater control of these structures would make your reasoning easier to read.
