IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries people would like to purchase own home rather tha giving rent pn every month.lets discuss both the negative and positive effect .

Commencing with the most saleint reason that peopls like to own home rather than living on lease and give money in form of rent every month because thier are many advantages of that first is they are free from monthly rents. Moreover, by purchasing properties may increase value in future and also create fixed asset for individuals. However, their social status increases like in some cultures owing a home in greater and repersent achievment. A part from this this also benefit to childrens like growing and stay in permanent house not to shift after every 2-3 months. for example, if person buy home for their family. they does not find any difficulty or presure. they can mange there things and renovate according to thier needs.

On other hand, there are some negative impact also However, nowdays homes and plots are become very expensive this can put financial pressue on famlies to buy. Moreover, indivduals cab face stress and heavy debts on them as long as they take loan from bank or from else. also home causes regular repair or renovation by applying new paint, furniture and etc.

for instance, people take home loan from bank but thier salary is not acceptable to pay installments can face debts and stress.

In conclusion, my view is if people have budget to own a home they should purchase and as long as there pocket cannot afford as much as they require they can shift on rent or small quarter because taking loans and paying installments is not everyone cup of tea.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest reasons for home ownership, including avoiding rent, building an asset, social status and stability for children, and you discuss drawbacks such as high prices, debt and maintenance. Your conclusion gives a clear conditional view: buying is sensible when affordable, while renting is preferable otherwise. These relevant points support the response. However, some are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that ownership improves social status is not developed, and the example about a family buying a home does not clearly show how it avoids frequent moves. Explain the reasons and consequences more precisely, and make your overall judgement about whether this is generally positive or negative more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Moreover,” “On other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the main stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several points are joined together without clear links, and some transitions are mechanical or incorrectly placed, as in “However” after the opening of the disadvantages paragraph. References such as “this” and “that” are not always clear, and the example about buying a home is loosely connected to the preceding point. Organise each paragraph around a clear main idea, then explain it and give a directly relevant example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “fixed asset,” “financial pressure,” “installments,” and “renovate,” and you use some variation rather than relying entirely on basic terms. However, the range is limited and many spelling, word-choice and collocation errors make the writing less fluent and sometimes harder to understand. Examples include “purchase own home,” “give money in form of rent,” and “not everyone cup of tea”; these are not natural or accurate expressions in this context. Frequent misspellings, such as “saleint,” “thier” and “indivduals,” also affect clarity. Build a bank of accurate topic phrases and check spelling and collocations carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a conditional idea in the conclusion and a reason introduced with “because.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty, so the reader has to work to interpret some points. For example, “by purchasing properties may increase value” lacks a clear subject, while “they does not find any difficulty” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. There are also problems with articles, plurals, verb forms and sentence boundaries, as in “homes and plots are become very expensive.” Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and punctuation. More accurate control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to follow.
