IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is believed that in few nations purchasing a house is very essential for individuals rather than renting them. I consider that it is positive situation which we discussed in the following paragraph.

Masses living in different nations opine that if they should puschase a home it is beneficial for them. Living in other nations is difficult for some people. For instance, if they renting a home every month than it creates on thier mind to pay rent at time. So, if they own a home permanently, they live in it with fully comfortably and after owning they do not need to pay the rent. It saves their money and that money will use by them for another work.

Renting is very high in some nations and do not give facilities and good material according to the rent. Masses purchase a home which is affordable to them. After purchased, he gives the rooms of the house on the rent to other individuals. It becomes an earning way for the owner of the house. If someone is alone at home than they go to their renters and spend time with them. In this way the owners mind is always stress free and enjoyable.

In conclude, owning home is important for people because it saves money of them and they live at home without any stress. So, people prefer to purchase their own home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall view that owning a home is positive, and you offer relevant reasons, including avoiding monthly rent and potentially earning income by renting out rooms. However, the task is only partly addressed: the reasons why home ownership is especially important in some countries are not clearly explained, and several points are brief or unclear, such as the claim that owners feel “stress free” when they spend time with renters. The response also contains 232 words, below the required 250, so the discussion is not sufficiently developed. To strengthen the response, explain the social or economic factors behind this preference and support each reason with a clearer example or explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas about saving rent and earning money are grouped into relevant sections, and phrases such as “For instance” and “In conclude” attempt to guide the reader. However, progression is limited, and the links between some ideas are unclear. For example, the discussion moves from renting rooms to an owner being alone and spending time with renters without explaining how this supports the main argument. Repeated references to “masses” and “home” also make the writing feel repetitive. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example directly to its main point, and vary referencing and linking expressions.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some vocabulary relevant to housing and finances, including “purchasing a house,” “rent,” “affordable” and “earning way.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “Masses” for people in general, “fully comfortably,” and “good material according to the rent.” There are also spelling errors such as “puschase” and “thier.” Aim for more precise housing-related vocabulary and check spelling and natural word combinations. For instance, describe the quality of a rental property or the facilities it provides rather than using the vague phrase “good material.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if they own a home permanently” and a reason introduced by “because.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “if they renting a home,” which needs a finite verb, and “that money will use by them,” which has an incorrect passive construction. There are also problems with articles and agreement, as in “it is positive situation” and “Renting is very high … and do not give facilities.” Practise forming complete conditional clauses and accurate passive sentences, and check articles and subject–verb agreement when editing.
