IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In few countries owning a house instead of renting one is extremely important for residents. The main reason why owning a home is preferable is because people don't want to pay rent every month. I believe it can be both negative and positive situation, and this essay will discuss both situations.
The significant reason why most people prefer buying a house instead of renting is that they don't want to pay a fixed monthly amount on rent from their income. In the last decade, property prices have skyrocketed and people find it more convenient to pay mortgage instead of paying rent. They have built a perspective that, property rent is just a waste of money when they have option of owning a property on installment. Many adults have already shifted towards buying houses or apartments on installments. Owning a home also gives a sense of security to people. For example, people feel much more comfortable in their own property, because it gives them freedom to do whatever changes they want in their homes.
I believe that owning a house is a positive situation for people whom long term plans are living in a specific place. People who have got their family businesses and permanent jobs in a city, and they don't have any plans of leaving their cities soon, should consider buying a house rather than renting it. But, people who are living temporarily in a city, renting a house is much more financially convenient for them. For instance, students who come to big cities to get quality education and people who come for better job oppurtunities should rent a home instead of owning one.
In conclusion, the main reason why people prefer to own a property is that they don't want to spend a signifiant amount of their income on rent. It is positive situation for the residents of a city, but it is a negative situation for temporary residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain that people may want to avoid monthly rent and gain security, then give a qualified view that ownership suits long-term residents while renting suits temporary residents. This is relevant and your position is understandable. However, the explanation of why home ownership is especially important in some countries remains fairly general; the essay does not explore possible cultural, social, or financial reasons in much depth. The claim that a mortgage is more convenient than rent also needs qualification, since buying can involve substantial costs and long-term commitments. Your positive-versus-negative discussion is sensible, but the negative side is mainly implied through the case for temporary residents rather than developed as a broader drawback of the situation. Develop and support these points more fully for a stronger response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons for ownership, a paragraph comparing long-term and temporary residents, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to your evaluation is easy to follow, and examples such as students moving to cities help illustrate the distinction. Cohesive phrases including “For example,” “But,” and “In conclusion” make the relationships between ideas clear, although some transitions feel mechanical. The introduction promises to discuss “both situations,” which is slightly vague, and the conclusion repeats the rent point without drawing together the reasoning in much detail. Some references, such as “it” in “it is a positive situation,” could be more precise. Use more varied links and clearer references to make the flow smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “property prices,” “mortgage,” “sense of security,” “permanent jobs,” and “temporary residents.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and some phrases show an attempt to discuss housing in a more specific way. However, several collocations and word choices are awkward or imprecise, such as “pay a fixed monthly amount on rent,” “built a perspective,” and “financially convenient.” There are also spelling errors in “oppurtunities” and “signifiant,” and “on installments” is repeated. These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use standard housing collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe rent as a recurring expense and a mortgage as a loan repayment.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including reason clauses (“The main reason why…”) and conditional structures (“people who… should consider buying”). Most sentences remain understandable, and the longer sentences generally communicate their intended meaning. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles and sentence construction: “In few countries” needs an article or a different determiner, and “both negative and positive situation” needs a plural noun or an article. In “people whom long term plans are living,” the relative pronoun and clause structure are incorrect; a possessive form is needed. Punctuation is also uneven, as in the unnecessary comma after “perspective.” Review articles, relative clauses, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
