IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, people prefer to buy a home instead of renting. This is very important for some people because they find it as a big achievement. And I feel very positive about those who own their own homes and succeed.

One of the main advantage of buying a home is people get rid from paying heavy rent every week. The renting prices has gone up to the peak where people are struggling to find rented home. The rise in population has led to increase in price of everything including rent.

Also, in some countries people have a dream of their own home and can be regarded as a private property. It is because people are always worried about their future. They always wanted to secure their future where having their own home is one of the. They often get respected and rewarded for this achievement. People dreamed of owning it and did hard work to achieve it which will make them disciplined and motivated. For instance, they can be role model to those who wanted to do something to make them proud.

And, there are so many students living in abroad for their study who find it even more difficult. For example, the increasing rent makes them stressed and are also suffering from mental health problems. Despite the universities fees, they still have to manage for other expenses which is quite hard. Therefore, having own home makes people happy and relief from all those situations. They could have their own space and doesn't have to worry about paying weekly rent.

In conclusion, people find it more secured when they have their own home without stress. This will be their private property which can be used whenever needed making people proud about themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership offers security, avoids rent, and represents an achievement, and you clearly view it positively. These are relevant reasons, and the discussion of rising rents gives some explanation. However, the position is not consistently supported: the opening says ownership is positive for people who “succeed,” while later points about students abroad and mental health are not clearly connected to why home ownership matters in the countries described. Several claims, such as owners being “respected and rewarded,” are asserted rather than explained. Develop two or three central reasons with clearer cause-and-effect links, and make sure each example directly supports your answer to both questions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an identifiable overall shape, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion, and signposts such as “One of the main advantage,” “Also,” and “In conclusion” help show the direction of the discussion. However, progression between ideas is uneven. The paragraph about students studying abroad shifts from home ownership to university fees and rent without clearly explaining how this supports the main argument. Some links are mechanical or unclear, including “And” at the start of a paragraph and “This” in the conclusion, whose reference is not precise. Group related reasons into focused paragraphs and use linking phrases to show the relationship between each claim and its example, rather than relying mainly on additive transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “private property,” “secure their future,” “increasing rent,” and “mental health problems,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated basic words such as “home,” “people,” and “own,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “find it as a big achievement,” “renting prices,” and “relief from all those situations” sound unnatural. “Role model” is relevant, but the example around it is difficult to interpret. Aim for more precise housing vocabulary and check common word partnerships. For instance, describe the financial benefit as avoiding “rental payments” and say that ownership can provide “greater housing security.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including the relative clause in “The rise in population has led to increase in price of everything” and the conditional idea beginning “where having their own home…”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “One of the main advantage,” “The renting prices has gone up,” and “They always wanted,” where number or tense forms do not fit. There are also incomplete or awkward constructions, such as “is one of the,” and agreement errors in “doesn't have to worry” after “They.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence structure, then revise longer sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
