IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is an argument in many countries that owning a house is better than renting a house and it is very crucial for individuals. This is because of the sence of security and freedom, own house gave you. From my perspective it is a positive situation because it is very convinient.

On the one hand, having your own house gives you a sence of security and freedom. As, you do not have to worry about the rent at the end of each month. Additionally, there is no security problem and also the landlords, who disturbs the people living in a rented house. To illustrate this point, i will discuss my own situation when i used to live in a rented house the owner of the house disturb us constantly for the rent and also we do not have any freedom and security in that house.

On the other hand, a person who has his own house has free will to do anything, such as renovating and decorating it according to his thoughts and ideas. Whereas, we cannot do this in a rented house because the owner of the house do not allow this. Moreover, in our own house you create many childhood memories and you also love to live their for the rest of your life, but in contrast to rented house you do nnot have any fixed house, you might have to move from one house to another. For instance, when my father bought our personal house for the family we were very happy just because, now we do not have to pay rent and have free will to do anything and we create many memorable memories.

To conclude, i firmly beleived that having a personal home for family is much better than rented one. From my perspective, this is a positive fact, having own house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain why people value home ownership, citing security, freedom from rent and landlords, and the ability to renovate, and you clearly judge it to be positive. These points are relevant and your personal examples help illustrate them. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others. The discussion of security largely repeats the concern about rent and landlord interference, while the claim that owning a home is “very convenient” is not developed. The conclusion restates your view but does not add a final reason or qualification. To strengthen the response, explain the wider significance of these benefits—for example, how stable housing can support family life—and develop each main point with a clear explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the two body paragraphs focus on related reasons for preferring ownership. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “Additionally,” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive or unclear: security, rent and landlord problems overlap, and the second paragraph moves from renovation to childhood memories and then moving house without clearly connecting each point. Some transitions, including “Whereas” and “but in contrast to,” are awkwardly used, and references such as “their” for “there” can confuse the reader. Group each paragraph around one main reason and use clearer links to show how each example supports it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “security,” “freedom,” “renovating,” “decorating,” and “childhood memories.” However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “own house,” “rented house,” and “free will.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “personal house,” “create many memorable memories,” and “the landlords, who disturbs the people.” Spelling errors—including “sence,” “convinient,” “beleived,” and “nnot”—also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise housing-related expressions and check spelling carefully. A wider set of natural collocations would help you express the same ideas more clearly and avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “who,” and “when,” so there is some structural variety. The main message remains understandable, but errors occur across sentence forms and sometimes make relationships between ideas less clear. For example, “own house gave you” shifts awkwardly between subject and tense, “the owner … do not allow this” has subject–verb disagreement, and “you might have to move from one house to another” is not smoothly connected to the preceding clause. There are also problems with articles, pronouns, and punctuation, as in “As, you do not have to worry” and “i will discuss.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and consistent verb form, and use punctuation to separate complete ideas.
