IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Owning a house is everyone's dream. Every individuals want to have their own house to live with their families peacefully. In some countries, owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. In my opinion, it is a positive thing to everyone. This essay will explain the positive aspects of this view.

First and foremost, owning a house is a positive thing because they can live without any restrictions or any types of hessitations. There are a lot of rules and regulations from the landlord of a house such as pets are not allowed, you cannot play any music loudly, you cannot use terrace etc. After owning a house people usually don't have to face this sorts of problem by the landlord. Moreover, after being the owner of a house there is no restriction to do anything. They can do whatever freely which is one of the most beneficial matters I can say. Landlord do many compalins if anyone want to leave their home. For instance, if someone want to shift their home from one place to other, landlord usually complains about door handle, sink, tap of water etc.

Furthermore, everyone have a dream to occupy their own house because they do not have to think about anything to do. There is no landlord of that house so noone shouldn't be there to complain about anything. Rented house cost a lot of money and it is really a hassle for a person cause that person can save that money for family and a better future. Everyone is this world deserve a better future. By owning a house, this future can be much secured than the renting one. For example, a peson has to pay minimum 1000$ for rent. On the other hand, if he can buy a house, paying 20000$ it will take five to six years to payback the loan. After that, it will be completely his house.

In conclusion, the view of owning a house is completely a postive situation because, people can have the independance to do whatever they like. As well as they can get a relief from a hassle to pay rent to the landlord and also can save some money for better future. So that, I can tell there are no other options except owning a house for a better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall view that home ownership is positive and support it with relevant points about freedom from landlords and the possibility of building financial security. However, the task asks both why owning a home is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. Most of your response argues that ownership is beneficial, while the reasons for its particular importance in some countries are only implied rather than explained. The financial example is also difficult to follow: the relationship between the stated rent, house price, and loan repayment is unclear. Develop the causes more directly—for example, cultural expectations, housing security, or investment—and explain your examples more carefully to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Your response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and signposts such as “First and foremost” and “Furthermore” help identify the main points. However, progression within the paragraphs is uneven: the first moves from restrictions to complaints about damage, while the second shifts from personal aspirations to rent and loan costs without clearly linking each point. Some connections are repetitive or awkward, including “Moreover” followed by another statement about freedom, and “So that” in the conclusion. Use topic sentences that state one central idea per paragraph, then explain and illustrate it in sequence. Clearer referencing would also help readers follow who “they” and “that person” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “landlord,” “restrictions,” “rent,” and “future.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors make parts less clear or natural. Examples include “hessitations,” “compalins,” “peson,” and “postive,” as well as “do many complains” and “a relief from a hassle.” Some phrases are vague or repetitive, such as “do whatever freely” and “better future.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and more precise language when discussing housing and finances. Proofreading spelling and checking how verbs combine with nouns would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including examples introduced with “because” and “if,” but control is inconsistent. Frequent agreement and sentence-pattern errors include “Every individuals want,” “everyone have,” and “Landlord do many…”; these should use singular agreement or a plural subject. There are also problems with negatives and clause construction, as in “noone shouldn't be there,” and with conditional phrasing in “if he can buy a house, paying 20000$ it will take…”. Articles and plurals are also unreliable, for example “this sorts of problem.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to follow. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences around a clear main clause.
