IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Owning a home is a good blessing from God. I strongly agree with this statement because if we own our house, there will be a lot of advantages of our own house rather then renting.

In some countries like Pakistan, having our own home is more beneficial thing rathr then living on someone else house on rent. Because we face a lot of problems on living others house like a lot of pressure to giving rent on every month.we have a lot of other billings to pay like electricity, gas bills and telephone and if we also have pressure of puying rent people face a lot of difficulties .If we have our own home there is no burden of puying house rents.

we try to buy our own home rather than renting because if we take house on rent firsly we pay a lot of advance on it then pressure from house owner to keep the house condition perfect as it is .

In my opinion, this is mostly a positive situation .Home ownership can encourage people to save money and plan for their future.it can also provide security during retirement becaue homeowners may no longer need to pay rent after they stop working. However buying a house can be difficult for people with limited incomes because it requires a large amout of money and may involve long term loans.

In conclusion people prefer owning homes becuase it provides financial security,Indepedence and a stable place to live. Although purchasing a property can be expensive,I believe that the advantages of home owners generally make it a positive developent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that people value ownership because renting brings recurring costs and pressure from landlords, and you clearly state that you see home ownership as mostly positive. The points about saving for the future and having security in retirement are relevant, while your acknowledgement that buying is difficult for people on limited incomes adds balance. However, the reasons why ownership is important in some countries are not fully explained, and the discussion of rent-related bills is somewhat unclear. Develop the country-specific context and explain how ownership provides greater stability or independence, using a specific example. This would make the response more fully developed and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs giving reasons and an opinion, and a conclusion that restates your position. The ideas generally follow a sensible order, and phrases such as “In my opinion” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is less controlled: several points are joined in long, crowded sentences, and the discussion moves from rent and bills to advance payments without clearly showing how the ideas connect. Punctuation and spacing also make some transitions difficult to follow. Use one main idea per paragraph, separate supporting explanations into sentences, and use linking phrases to show cause and contrast more precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “limited incomes,” “retirement,” and “long term loans,” which helps communicate the main argument. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “good blessing from God,” “other billings,” and “pressure of puying rent.” Spelling errors, including “rathr,” “becaue,” and “developent,” also reduce the accuracy and polish of the writing. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “a significant advantage,” “household bills,” and “the burden of paying rent.” Proofreading spelling and avoiding repeated use of “pressure” would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if we own our house, there will be a lot of advantages” and a contrast introduced by “Although.” These attempts help express reasons and qualifications. However, sentence control is inconsistent, and errors in articles, agreement, prepositions, and punctuation sometimes make the meaning harder to follow. For example, “living on someone else house” needs a possessive form, while “pressure to giving rent on every month” has an incorrect verb pattern and preposition. Several sentences also run together, as in the section about bills and difficulties. Practise accurate clause construction and check each sentence for complete punctuation and grammatical patterns.
