IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In this concurrent world, it is undoubtly true that in some countries people prefer to have their personal home instead of renting one. There are significant factors that influence this mindset.
I strongly believe that having personal home is very crucial in this era instead of living in a rented apartment. In this eassy I will further elaborate my reasons.
Firstly, the most coherent factor to be considered that cannot be neglected is the fact that renting home could be prohibitively expensive. Rents for apartments are surging day by day and are becoming considerably unaffordable to pay for many people. For example, average fare rate increased 3 folds in Islamabad, during last three years while wage rates had negligible change since past few years. Therefore, managing such high rate low montly income is challenging for many families.
Secondly, buying a house is better startegy because of the fact that instead of spending on rental amount, one can pay monthy installment for the brand new home. For instance, according to many Governmnent housing schemes, one can own property or house by taking laon and paying monthly installments with low interest rate. This way, many people perfer to have personal home as this will save them from monthly high fare and that money can be used in housing scheme and they can actually have their own property in 5 to 10 years.
Overall, I believe, having personal house is much more important and is better idea in this economy as it will save many families from high fares.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest that high rents and the possibility of paying instalments toward ownership explain why people value owning a home, and you state that you consider this preference positive. The Islamabad example gives one reason some households may struggle with renting. However, the response focuses mainly on affordability and does not explore other possible reasons, such as security, stability, or cultural expectations. Your positive position is clear, but its benefits are asserted more than explained; for example, the conclusion says ownership is “much more important” without discussing possible drawbacks or clarifying when buying is advantageous. Develop each reason with fuller explanation and make the evaluation more balanced and specific.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a concluding statement. This makes the main line of argument reasonably easy to follow. However, progression is limited because the paragraphs largely repeat the same contrast between rent and ownership, and the conclusion adds little beyond restating your view. Some links are mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “because of the fact that” and “For example/For instance.” The sentence beginning “Therefore, managing such high rate…” is also difficult to connect smoothly to the preceding point. Use clearer links between claim, explanation, and example, and organise the body around distinct reasons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “prohibitively expensive,” “monthly instalment,” “housing schemes,” and “interest rate,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “significant factors” and “considerably unaffordable.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make the writing less natural: “fare rate” is used for rent, “wage rates” for wages, and “personal home” for a home of one’s own. Spelling errors such as “undoubtly,” “eassy,” and “Governmnent” are noticeable. Build accuracy by learning common housing collocations and checking spelling, rather than relying on repeated general phrases such as “the fact that.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the most coherent factor to be considered that cannot be neglected” and a conditional structure in “one can pay monthly instalment.” These attempts show some range, but complex constructions are often not controlled, and errors recur in articles, agreement, and sentence formation. For example, “having personal home” needs an article, while “managing such high rate low monthly income is challenging” lacks a clear grammatical relationship between its ideas. The opening phrase “In this concurrent world” also does not form a natural grammatical expression. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly connected supporting clause, then check articles and plural forms.
