IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some states it is a significant approach for people to buy a house despite rent a home. Therefore, It happens because individuals have to bear excessive expenses when they rent a house whereas they earn small amount of money. I believe it is a positive situation for people to have their own houses.

In this modern era, to have a home is the biggest necessity for people. There are numerous people who are homeless, and they dream to have a home to live. Many people are living in rented homes, and they want to build their own house, as they are unable to pay monthly rent with frequent increase of fixed amount every year. For instance, in today's time people are earning a samll amount in terms of salary or people working on daily wages. They are unable to pay rent on monthly bases, while they are hardly affording thier bread and butter and even medicines.

However, to rent a property is an option for short term investment and to have a temporary shelter, but owning a house is a one time investment and a releif for life from monthly installmemts and direct debit from account in terms of house rent. Moreover, when people have thier own houses, they live in there without any restriction. They don't need to follow the policies of the owner of the house. For example, when a person own a house, he can build numerous changes with time, he can modernise the house and decorate and design it with sophesticated trends.

In conclusion, Owning a house is the first preference of a people in some countries. People in developed countries spend luxurious life with many facilities, therefore, numerous other people look and observe thier culture and lifestyle. Consequently, they follow them and try hard to buy thier own houses. From my persepective, it is a positive situation to own a home and live a healthy life with family and friends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that rising rent is difficult for people on low incomes, and you clearly state that home ownership is positive. The point about having freedom to alter and decorate a home also supports your view. However, the reasons are not developed evenly. The discussion of rent focuses mainly on affordability, while the conclusion introduces a different explanation—that people imitate the lifestyles of those in developed countries—which is not established in the body. Some claims, such as owning a home being a “one time investment” and a “relief for life,” also need qualification or explanation. Develop a smaller number of reasons with clearer examples and keep the conclusion consistent with the main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the main position is easy to identify. The first body paragraph explains financial pressure, while the second contrasts renting with ownership and gives an example of personal freedom. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the conclusion’s point about copying lifestyles in developed countries does not follow clearly from the preceding discussion. There are also unclear references, such as “they live in there,” and some long sentences join several ideas without clear punctuation. Use more precise referencing and ensure each paragraph develops a connected line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “monthly rent,” “temporary shelter,” “policies of the owner” and “modernise,” which helps communicate relevant ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “significant approach” and “one time investment,” but these combinations are not natural in context. Several spelling errors—“samll,” “thier,” “releif,” “installmemts” and “sophesticated”—reduce accuracy, while phrases such as “on monthly bases” and “direct debit from account in terms of house rent” are awkward or imprecise. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than more elaborate wording; proofreading spelling and checking phrases in context would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “as,” “when” and “while,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “They don’t need to follow the policies of the owner of the house.” However, there are errors in verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence boundaries. For example, “despite rent a home” needs a gerund or a different construction, and “when a person own a house” requires subject–verb agreement. In “they are hardly affording their bread and butter,” the verb pattern is not grammatical. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, including “Therefore, It” and the missing space after a comma in “bases, while.” Review these patterns and edit each sentence for one clear grammatical structure.
