IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People tend to buy a home rather than living in a rented house because it gives a social status, a freedom to live and a comfort of living without worrying about landlord or rent raise. Plus there is a phenomenon where owning a house is a symbol of a successful life and that makes a image in society that you have accomplished something.
There are many people who believe that owning a house is better than living in the rented house simply because they do not have to worry about the landlord. They can do any changes in their house without asking for permission and live freely without worrying about rent raise. Additionally owning a house means owning a land which can be seen as a great opportunity for investment because the house can be sold in a good price and might get a good profit out of it. Owning a house also provides the sense of security and people also think to pass their property to next generation.
Furthermore, renting a place can be a good option if people do not intent to pay mortgage or they are migrating to another country because they might not be independently stable to purchase a house. Plus it is more suitable options for students who is studying far from their home.
To summaries, there are many positive benefits for owning a house and most of the time people prefer to it but you can choose to rent a house depending on your personal goal or situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain why ownership is valued, citing freedom from landlords, investment potential, security, and passing property to the next generation, and you indicate that this is generally positive. These are relevant reasons and your position is understandable. However, the positive/negative judgement is not developed as fully as the reasons for ownership. The conclusion says there are “many positive benefits,” but does not explain why the overall situation is positive or consider a possible drawback, such as financial pressure or reduced mobility. The discussion of renting is useful context, though it does not directly evaluate the wider importance placed on ownership. Develop your judgement with a clear explanation and supporting example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from reasons for ownership to circumstances in which renting may suit people, followed by a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and connectors such as “Additionally” and “Furthermore” signal relationships between ideas. Some cohesion is mechanical or unclear, however. “Plus” is used repeatedly, and the opening paragraph overlaps with the next paragraph by listing several of the same reasons. The final paragraph shifts to renting without a strong link to the question’s evaluation of home ownership. Improve progression by grouping related reasons, avoiding repetition, and using clearer references—for example, specify what “it” refers to in “most of the time people prefer to it.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “social status,” “investment,” “sense of security,” “mortgage,” and “next generation.” These terms help communicate the main ideas, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “a freedom,” “rent raise,” “sold in a good price,” and “independently stable.” “A image” also shows an article-related word-form issue, while “To summaries” is an inaccurate form. Aim for more natural combinations and precise phrasing, such as “freedom,” “rent increases,” “sold at a good price,” and “financially stable.” This would make your argument sound more fluent and controlled without requiring more complicated vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “where,” and “if.” Most sentences communicate their main meaning, and the errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “a social status” and “a comfort” use articles awkwardly; “students who is studying” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “they do not have to worry about the landlord” would be clearer as “a landlord.” The opening sentence also strings several ideas together without a fully controlled structure. Review article use and agreement, and divide long sentences where needed while retaining some complex structures.
