IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that, in most of nations owning a home rather than renting one is very crucial for individuals. From my perspective it is a positive trends. In the upcomming paragraph, I will discuss all the significant benifits.
One major reason why people prefer to own a home is that it provides long-term financial security. Unlike rent, which is paid every month without creating an asset, mortgage payments can eventually result in full ownership of a property. This can be particularly important for families because they have a permanent place to live and do not have to worry about landlords increasing rent or asking them to leave. For example, a family that purchases a house at a young age may have a valuable asset by the time they reach retirement. Therefore, home ownership can provide both stability and financial protection.
I believe this trend is generally positive because owning a property can also give people a greater sense of independence and stability. Homeowners can make decisions about their property without seeking permission from a landlord, and they may also benefit from an increase in property value over time. However, purchasing a house can be extremely expensive and may require people to take on substantial debt. Despite this drawback, I believe the long-term benefits of ownership generally outweigh the financial difficulties involved.
In conclusion, people in some countries prefer owning homes because it offers financial security, independence and long-term stability. Although buying a property can be financially demanding, I consider this to be a positive development overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain why ownership appeals to people, especially through “long-term financial security,” and clearly state that you see it as positive. The mortgage example and discussion of independence support your position, while acknowledging the cost of buying adds balance. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed: for instance, the possible rise in property value is mentioned but not explained, and the reasons for the importance of ownership could be explored more broadly. The response is also one word below the required minimum: 249 words, with the nine words copied from the prompt excluded. Develop one or two ideas further and ensure the response meets the minimum.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons and evaluation, and a concise conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Unlike,” “For example,” “Therefore,” and “Despite this drawback” help show relationships between points. This coherent arrangement is effective, though some transitions feel formulaic, particularly “In the upcomming paragraph, I will discuss…”; a direct thesis would connect the introduction more naturally to the body. The positive evaluation is also repeated in the final paragraph without adding much synthesis. To strengthen progression, use links more selectively and make each paragraph’s main purpose explicit, while ensuring references such as “this trend” clearly point back to the issue.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant phrases such as “financial security,” “full ownership,” “permanent place to live,” and “substantial debt.” These help communicate the main ideas clearly, and some less common vocabulary is attempted. However, several spelling errors and awkward choices reduce precision: “upcomming” and “benifits” are misspelled, “positive trends” does not fit the singular idea, and “in most of nations” is unnatural. “Extremely crucial” is also unnecessarily emphatic. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Proofread spelling and focus on common collocations and precise word forms to make the range more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “Unlike rent, which is paid every month without creating an asset, mortgage payments can eventually result in full ownership of a property.” The conditional example and contrast clauses also show some structural variety. Some grammatical errors remain, including “in most of nations,” which needs an article or a different construction, and “it is a positive trends,” where the determiner and noun do not agree. The opening sentence is also awkwardly structured, with several introductory phrases before its main point. These errors rarely obstruct meaning, but greater control of articles, agreement, and sentence framing would improve accuracy. Continue using complex structures, while checking each sentence for a clear subject and correct agreement.
