IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In almost all countries, the rent of houses is too high that people are spending highest proportion of their income in paying household rents. In some countries renting a home become so expensive that people are in favour of purchasing it. Because owning a house may cost less than paying every month rent. Usually rents inrease by each passing year, which is also a reason to purchase own house.

There are some people who want to decore their home according to their taste, but people living in rental homes can do such things because they have restrictions and have to follow owners' rules. If they have own home they can do whatever they want. This is also one of the reasons why people prefer to buy house rathen than renting one.

Renting homes are widely affecting the lower and middle class families, because they are not capable to own a house. But it has been seen in recent years that people are taking loans to buy homes and are using their rental amount in paying loans. In some countries people look up to the one who own a house. Head of the family usually think to buy land or home so that his family never face residental problems in future.

In conclusion, I think it is a positive situation to own a house rather than renting one. Because this provides lots of benefits and a secure residence. For instance, a person may free from tension of paying every month rent and can decor according to their taste and wish.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you give reasons for home ownership, including rising rents, the freedom to decorate, and the wish to provide a secure home for one’s family, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. These points are relevant, but they are not developed equally. The financial argument is introduced through the claim that buying may cost less than rent, yet you do not explain when this is true or acknowledge costs such as loans and maintenance. The social status point is also mentioned briefly without showing how it influences people’s choices. Develop each reason with a clear explanation or example, and make the positive judgement more balanced by recognising possible disadvantages.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: the opening introduces the issue, the body paragraphs present reasons, and the conclusion restates your view. Ideas generally progress from financial concerns to personal freedom and family security. However, some links between ideas are abrupt or unclear. For example, “Renting homes are widely affecting the lower and middle class families” does not clearly connect to the following point about taking loans. The repeated use of “Because” to begin a sentence also makes the connection to the previous idea feel mechanical. Use clearer transitions to show cause and contrast, and ensure each paragraph develops one main point in a more deliberate sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “rental homes,” “restrictions,” “loans,” and “secure residence,” so the main ideas are understandable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less natural. Examples include “rent of houses,” “purchase own house,” “decrore,” and “residental problems.” Some phrases, such as “spending highest proportion of their income,” are also awkwardly formed. Aim for more precise housing and finance vocabulary, and check spelling and common word partnerships. This would help you express the same ideas more fluently and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “Usually rents increase by each passing year, which is also a reason…” and a conditional structure in “If they have own home…”. However, errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “renting a home become” needs subject–verb agreement, while “people living in rental homes can do such things because they have restrictions” creates a confusing grammatical relationship between the ideas. The sentence beginning “Because owning a house…” is also a fragment. Practise forming complete sentences and check articles and verb forms, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
