IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In few countries, owning a home is paramount than renting one. The reason could be personal, financial, peer pressure or any other. I reckon this as a positive situation.

First of all, home is a place where kids grow up and lots of memories are attached with that house. If it is rented, you might have to move someday leaving those memories behind even if you don't want to. But if it is owned, you can live there as long as you want to. A nostalgia remains with you whenever you walk down the memory lane.

Furthermore, if you own a house, you can balance your financial situation with keeping it as collateral and take out mortgage. A rented house can't provide you this facility.

Recently, a friend of mine was looking for an apartment to rent but we insisted that he should buy one. He bought it and years later, when he was looking for a big amount of capital, he processed loan with the same house as collateral and he managed his business with that money. Even though he purchased that house on peer pressure, finally it paid off.

In addition, you can renovate and redesign the house that you own as the way you like. With rented apartment, you are prohibited to change at some level. There will be rigorous rules and regulation.

To conclude, it is extremely beneficial for someone to own a house. In some countries, it is often seen as a prestigious achievement in society. Apart from that, it is of paramount importance to balance unforseeable financial circumstances as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses both parts of the question: you suggest reasons for home ownership, including emotional attachment, financial security, social pressure and the freedom to renovate, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. The personal example about your friend gives one point concrete support. This meets the task well, but the reasons are not equally developed: the financial point is illustrated, while the opening reference to personal, financial and peer-pressure factors is not fully explained, and the social-prestige idea appears only in the conclusion. To strengthen the response, explain more directly why ownership is especially important in some countries and develop each main reason with a clear explanation or example. Your position is clear, though the discussion could be more balanced and fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons, and a conclusion. Sequencing expressions such as “First of all,” “Furthermore,” and “In addition” help readers follow the points, and the example about your friend is placed logically after the financial argument. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical because several paragraphs begin with similar additive transitions. Some connections and references could also be clearer: “A nostalgia remains with you” does not connect smoothly to the preceding explanation, and “Apart from that” in the conclusion introduces a point that has not been fully developed earlier. Use a wider range of natural links and make each paragraph’s central idea and its connection to the overall argument more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “collateral,” “mortgage,” “renovate,” “prestigious achievement” and “paramount importance.” These choices help communicate financial and social aspects of home ownership. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “paramount than,” “balance your financial situation with keeping it as collateral,” and “processed loan”; these reduce precision even though the intended meaning is generally understandable. “A nostalgia remains with you” is also an awkward collocation. Check spelling and word forms, including “unforeseeable,” and choose phrases that fit the intended meaning rather than relying on ambitious wording. More accurate collocations would make your vocabulary sound more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If it is rented, you might have to move someday” and a relative clause in “a place where kids grow up.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “In few countries” needs an article or quantifier, “if it is owned” has an unclear reference, and “you can renovate and redesign the house that you own as the way you like” has an incorrect construction. The sentence beginning “Even though he purchased that house on peer pressure” also uses an unsuitable preposition within the clause. Review articles, pronoun reference, clause construction and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
