IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In recent years, owing a home has become widely discussed around the world. Nowadays, many people are concerned about this issue. This is an important topic because it affects individuals and society in different ways.

On the one hand, it is often argued that having a home rather than renting one is very important. In my opinion, I will strongly disagree with this situation this is because, having your own home is better than paying monthly rents of a house. For example, many people nowadays prefer to have there own house. A good example of this can be seen in several ways as my friend is living in a rental house and he pay every month his rent which is very costly for him. Therefore, having a self home is way better than paying rents ever month.

On the other hand, people become more aware of this situation that having own house is way better than renting it every month. Therefore, this can improve both productivity and efficiency. Consequently, society may experience positive changes. However, there are also some drawbacks to this trend. Although this development has benefits, it may also create challenges

In my opinion, living a life in your own house is way better than living in someone and paying rent every month like a puppet is more effective.

In conclusion, although both views have their advantages, I believe that owing home is the better approach., the benefits are more significant. Overall, I believe this is a positive development for society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You give a clear preference for owning a home, especially in the final paragraphs, and you offer one relevant reason: rent can be costly, illustrated by your friend’s monthly payments. However, the response only partially addresses the question. It does not explain in a developed way why home ownership is especially important in some countries, and the discussion of benefits and drawbacks remains general; “this can improve both productivity and efficiency” is not explained. Your position is also confusing when you write, “I will strongly disagree with this situation,” before arguing in favour of owning a home. The response is 244 words, six words below the required minimum. Develop the reasons behind the social preference and state your position consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” show awareness of paragraph structure. However, ideas are not arranged in a coherent progression: the first body paragraph says you disagree with home ownership, then supports it, while the second repeats that owning a house is better without adding a clear new point. Linking words such as “Therefore” and “Consequently” do not always show a logical relationship between the claims. The conclusion also contains a confusing punctuation break. Plan one main idea for each paragraph, connect each example directly to its point, and avoid repeating the same claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, with relevant terms such as “renting,” “monthly rents,” “productivity” and “society.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated use of “way better” and “this situation.” Some word choices and collocations make the meaning less natural: “self home,” “living in someone” and “like a puppet” do not express the intended idea clearly in an academic essay. There is also a spelling error in “there own house,” where the possessive form is needed. Use more precise housing-related language and vary repeated phrases—for example, describe the financial security or long-term stability that ownership may provide.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including “Although this development has benefits, it may also create challenges,” and most of the basic message can be understood. However, the range of sentence forms is limited, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty. For example, “I will strongly disagree with this situation this is because” joins clauses without appropriate punctuation or structure. Other errors include “he pay” instead of “he pays,” “having own house” without an article or possessive, and the comma splice in the conclusion: “the better approach., the benefits are more significant.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise accurate clause joining, subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence-ending punctuation.
