IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, owning a house rather than renting one is considered extremely important. This is mainly because owning a property provides financial security and a sense of stability. In my opinion, I believe this is a positive development, although it can create financial pressure for some people.

There are several reasons why people prefer to own their house. Firstly, purchasing a house is widely regarded as a lonh-term investment. Unlike, tenants, homeowners do not have to pay monthly rent indefinitely, and value of their property may increase over time. This can help them build wealth and achieve financial independence. Secondly, owning a house provides a sense of security and belonging. People can live in their homes without worrying about landloeds increasing the rent or asking them to leave. Furthermore, homeowners have greater freedom to renovate their properties according to their prefrences.

I believe that this situation is largely positive because home ownership can improve people's quality of life and provide stability for their families.

For instance, parents who own a house may feel more confident about their children's future because they have a permanent place to live. Moreover, a property can be passed down to future generations, helping families maintain their financial security. However, there are some disadvantages to consider. Buying a house requires a substantial amount of money, and many people have to take out long-term loans. Consequently, they may experience financial stress if they struggle to make their monthly mortgage payments. In addition, people who focus excessively to purchasing peoperty may neglect other important needs, such as education and savings.

In conclusion, people in some countries place great importance on owning a home because it offers financial benefits, independence and stability. Although purchasing a property can be financially challenging, I believe advantages outweigh the disadvantages, provided that people make this decision according to their financial circumstances.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership matters, citing investment, security, belonging and freedom to renovate, and gives a clear positive judgement while acknowledging financial pressure. The position remains consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. Supporting examples such as parents feeling confident about their children’s future and property being passed to later generations help extend the argument. The discussion is relevant and generally well supported, though some points are asserted rather than explored in depth—for example, the claim that ownership leads to financial independence could explain more clearly how this happens, and the disadvantages receive less development than the benefits. Further explanation of these points would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons for ownership, a paragraph evaluating its benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the argument easy to follow. The half-step beyond a basic coherent arrangement is visible in the way the writer groups related benefits and then introduces a counterpoint. However, some linking is mechanical, and the transition from the reasons paragraph to the evaluation paragraph could be smoother. The phrase “In addition” introduces another drawback, but the relationship between excessive focus on purchasing property and neglecting education or savings could be made more explicit. Use a wider variety of natural transitions and clearer links between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing housing and finance, with useful topic-specific phrases such as “financial security,” “long-term investment,” “monthly mortgage payments,” and “passed down to future generations.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and there is some attempt to use less common language. However, range and precision are uneven: “positive development” and “sense of security” recur as broad formulations, while “focus excessively to purchasing” is an inaccurate collocation. There are also spelling errors, including “lonh-term,” “landloeds,” “prefrences,” and “peoperty.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more precise phrasing would strengthen control. Aim to use varied, natural collocations rather than simply substituting more formal words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because they have a permanent place to live” and a conditional phrase, “provided that people make this decision according to their financial circumstances.” Most sentences are clear, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “Unlike, tenants,” the comma is unnecessary; “the value of their property” needs an article; and “people who focus excessively to purchasing” uses an incorrect preposition within the grammatical pattern. The opening also says “This is mainly because…” followed by “In my opinion, I believe,” which is grammatically possible but redundant in expression. Greater consistency in article use and preposition patterns, alongside a broader range of accurately controlled complex structures, would improve the response.
