IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that owning a home instead of renting is crucial in some countries people. while there are certain valid arguments against this view, I largely believe that this is a positive situation because it offers greater long-term benefits for people's savings and overall well being.

One of the primary reasons why I think this is a positive situation is that owning home means saving extra money and getting adequate freedom. This is mainly because not every country has the same opportunity. There are a number of countires, where buying homes is extremely necessary. A clear illustration of this can be seen in numerous well-developed countries, including Switzerland, Norway and the USA, where purchasing homes can save money and give a better life owing to the high cost of living. Therefore, in many cases, buying homes is beneficial in some countries.

Admittedly, opponents of the view contend that owing homes is expensive. Not everyone have the ability to do this. A major reason is that there are some people who do not make sufficient money in order to purchase a home. For example, those who are security guards and cleaners usually cannot own a home. Nevertheless, this argument does not hold up to scrutiny because people now have the option to loan money with lower interest. As a result, most individuals can buy homes whether they have good salaries or not.

To conclude, although legitimate objections remian, I largely maintain that this is a positive situation, given that owing homes helps saving money and overall provide a better lifestyle. Consequently, it is better to purchase a home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear: you largely support home ownership, and you give a reason related to savings and freedom, followed by a counterargument about affordability. However, the task asks both why owning a home is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. The explanation of why it matters is only partly developed: the references to high living costs and a “better life” do not explain clearly how ownership benefits people in those specific contexts. The affordability paragraph is relevant, but the claim that lower-interest loans mean most people can buy a home is broad and insufficiently supported. Develop the reasons with clearer cause-and-effect explanations and more balanced, specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting a supporting point and a counterargument, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Admittedly,” “Nevertheless,” and “As a result” help signal the direction of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This is mainly because not every country has the same opportunity” does not clearly explain the preceding claim about saving money and freedom, and the move from country examples to the general conclusion is abrupt. The conclusion repeats the main position but adds little synthesis. Make each paragraph’s central idea explicit, then use references and transitions that show precisely how each example supports it.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “owning a home,” “high cost of living,” “sufficient money,” and “interest.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “does not hold up to scrutiny” show an attempt to use more formal language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “owning home,” “loan money,” and “helps saving money” are not natural formulations in this context. There are also spelling errors, including “countires” and “remian.” Aim for more precise housing and finance vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations during revision so that your meaning sounds natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “those who are security guards and cleaners” and a concession structure beginning “although.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “owning a home … is crucial in some countries people” has an unclear sentence structure, “Not everyone have” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “owning homes helps saving money” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Article use is also inconsistent in “owning home.” Review agreement, articles, and verb patterns such as “help someone save” or “help with saving.” More accurate control of these patterns, alongside your existing sentence variety, would make the argument easier to follow.
