IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many nations, it is very crucial for the residents to have their own home instead of of renting it. This is because, every person wants to have ownership of their residency. As for as I am concerned, it is a positive development due to the fact that, people have no control of their home who give rents so they can obtain its full control, while some people content that it is not essential due the issue of finance.

To begin with, majority of the residents require ownership of their residency because every individual wants their home to be exactly what it sounds like their home. There is nothing new as it has been like this through human history. For instance, colonies which later once again became the country as before lead by its own inhabitants. As a result, citizens always want to the owner to decide what happens to them and when they rent their homes, they can not even paint it without the permission of its owner.

Furthermore, I tend to think that it is a beneficial situation because if a person is renting a apartment, there might be numerous scissors in his life. A single dot on the wall can cause you a major trauma. Since the wall was not his own. The bedroom he is currently sleeping in might not be available for him by tomorrow. In contrast, some individuals argue that not owning their residency could be a small relief when it comes to their finance. Additionally, as a renter, they do not have to pay mortgage, for which majority of individuals borrow loans. As a result, they do not need to have worry for such issues like, natural disaster, house market crash.

Bottom line, every individual tries their best to avail the ownership of his/her residency. I believe, it could be an advantageous development for them who want to obtain its control.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest that people value having control over their homes, and you state that home ownership is beneficial. The examples about being unable to paint a rented home and the possibility of losing access to a bedroom help explain this view. However, the reasons why ownership matters are not always clearly developed. The reference to colonies and national independence is difficult to connect to individual home ownership, while the financial counterargument is introduced but not fully weighed against your position. Make your explanation more direct and extend each main point with a clear cause-and-effect link or a relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore” and “Bottom line” help show the stages of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven: the discussion of colonies interrupts the point about personal control, and the financial counterargument appears late without being clearly connected to the main position. Some linking phrases are used mechanically or inaccurately, including “As a result” where the relationship between ideas is not clear. Improve the logical sequence by keeping each paragraph focused on one central reason and using references that clearly identify what “it” or “they” refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You attempt topic-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “mortgage,” “permission” and “natural disaster,” and some choices communicate the intended meaning. However, the range is limited by repetition of “residency” and “home,” while several inaccurate or unnatural expressions make the reader work to understand your ideas. Examples include “numerous scissors in his life,” “a single dot on the wall can cause you a major trauma,” and “avail the ownership.” These are not suitable collocations for the intended meanings. Choose familiar, precise phrases rather than forcing unusual wording, and check collocations and word forms. For example, “gain control of the property” is clearer than “obtain its full control.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because,” “if” and “when.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “it is very crucial for the residents to have their own home instead of of renting it,” “every person wants to have ownership,” and “they do not need to have worry.” There are also problems with articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “renting a apartment” and the fragment “Since the wall was not his own.” Review article use, verb patterns and how to join dependent clauses. Aim for accurate, complete sentences before adding more complex structures.
