IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People prefer to have a house with ownership rather than living in a rented apartment. In my opinion, it is a positive situation as owning a house can give permanent safety without worrying about the shelter in case of crisis. This essay will discuss the positive aspects related to it.
To begin with, the sense of safety and security that comes with owning a house is non negotiable as one can stay there irrespective of the current financial situation as some people have varying income amount every month depending on the amount of sales done which in turn might impact the rental house stay. Therefore, a stable home can be a major advantage in such cases as there is no tension about paying rent or losing shelter in case of unpaid rent.
Moreover, social status is the another aspect as rented houses do not attain much attention and respect in society but a well maintained house, even if small in size can be a better sign of status in society building respect and relationships nearby in the colony. As a result, people look upto people who have achieved success and made big houses as a person to respect and admire.
Also, confidence comes from within when a person knows that he has achieved such huge milestone in life as building and owning a house is not a piece of cake in cities like bombay and pune as property rates touch skies and in such scenario when an individual earns a residence to live in, it becomes a huge achievement thereby building the confidence of person, and as a result a person becomes more productive and optimistic in all the aspects of life.
In conclusion, owning a house has many benefits as it provides a lifelong safety and security in all kin of conditions from financial issues to crisis and it also helps in building the social status and confidence required to live in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why home ownership matters, citing security during financial difficulty, social standing, and personal confidence, and you clearly judge it to be positive. The security point is the most fully explained, with a link between fluctuating income, rent payments, and the risk of losing shelter. The points about status and confidence are relevant, but are less developed: for example, the claim that owning a house earns respect is asserted rather than supported with a clear explanation, and the confidence point could be connected more directly to why ownership is important in these countries. Develop each reason with a specific explanation or example and acknowledge any limitation to make the discussion more balanced and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, three body paragraphs signposted by “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “Also,” and a conclusion that restates the position. The ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and linking phrases such as “Therefore” and “As a result” help show relationships. However, the repeated use of these explicit transitions can feel mechanical, and some sentences contain several connected points, making the progression harder to follow. For instance, the final body paragraph moves from property prices to achievement, confidence, and productivity in one long sentence. Divide such sentences and make the links between claims more precise; also use clearer referencing where “it” or “such cases” could refer to more than one idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial situation,” “social status,” “property rates,” and “productive and optimistic.” These choices allow you to discuss security, social perceptions, and personal benefits, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “not a piece of cake” and “property rates touch skies,” but these are informal or unnatural for an academic essay. Some collocations and word choices are imprecise, including “the another aspect,” “a person to respect and admire,” and “lifelong safety.” Aim for more natural academic phrasing and avoid repeating “house,” “person,” and “confidence.” More precise vocabulary would make the argument sound more controlled and formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “which,” and “when.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in longer sentences and occasionally make relationships between ideas less clear. For example, “the sense of safety … is non negotiable as one can stay there … as some people have varying income” combines several clauses without clear control, while “social status is the another aspect” has an article error. There are also issues with agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “a person becomes more productive … in all the aspects of life.” Use shorter sentences when an idea has several stages, check articles and agreement, and punctuate complex clauses carefully. This would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
