IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many countries buying a house is prefered instead of renting one is very beneficial for residents because that way they would not have to worry about rent every month. I think it is a positive opinion as it facilitates in saving money or spending on something more crucial.

Having one's own home, keeps you away from anxiety of giving rent on time each month. If someone with low budget is renting house, he or she would always keep aside money for rent regardless how much he need it to spend on something else. For instance, if someone has to pay house rent of 800$ and child school fees of 500$ in the same month, he would constantly worry about managing expanses. Hence owning a home helps in preventing worries about money management.

It is a positive idea to live in your own home as it helps in saving money or freely spending on more beneficial stuff. Having money in your pocket or saving in bank gives a sense of satisfaction. For example, if you have no money to pay the landlord, that money could be saved with which one can buy or upgrade to new car later in life. That way money would be spend on their own self instead of paying it to someone else

in conclusion owning home keeps axiety away

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a clear opinion that home ownership is positive and offer relevant reasons, especially avoiding monthly rent and having more freedom to use money. The examples about rent and school fees, and saving towards a car, help illustrate these points. However, the response only partly develops the task: it explains why owning a home may be attractive, but the reasons are repetitive and the benefits are asserted rather than explored in depth. The conclusion is extremely brief and does not summarise the argument fully. The response also contains 224 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 250. Develop the reasons further and add a fuller conclusion that directly answers both parts of the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas within the body paragraphs are generally relevant, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Hence” and “For example” show an attempt to connect claims with illustrations. However, progression is limited because both body paragraphs largely repeat the idea that owning a home saves money. Some connections are awkward or unclear, and the final conclusion is too short to bring the discussion together. The opening sentence is also difficult to follow because it combines the preference for buying with its supposed benefit in one structure. Give each paragraph a distinct purpose, use clearer transitions between claims and examples, and finish with a complete summary of your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “anxiety,” “satisfaction,” “managing expenses” and “beneficial.” However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes the writing repetitive and occasionally difficult to interpret. For example, “prefered” is misspelled, “expanses” is used where “expenses” is intended, and “spending on something more crucial” is vague. The repeated use of “money,” “rent” and “home” also limits precision. Build a wider set of topic-specific expressions and check spelling, word forms and collocations. More precise phrases such as “housing costs” or “financial security” would help express the argument clearly without relying on repeated general terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex sentences, including the conditional example beginning “If someone with low budget is renting house,” and you use basic sentence forms to communicate your main position. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. The opening sentence has an incomplete or confused structure (“buying a house is prefered instead of renting one is very beneficial”), while “Having one's own home, keeps you away” has incorrect punctuation and sentence construction. There are also problems with articles and agreement, as in “renting house” and “how much he need it,” and the final sentence lacks appropriate punctuation. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check articles, verb forms, agreement and punctuation.
