IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 4.5)
People are living in different areas of the country have their own home or living in rented home.
Firstly will talk about the areas in which areas they are living. In city the land prices higher than the village.
secondly will talk about the income of the people because this is the main thing which concern about owing the home or rent it.
The people with higher income is able to buy the land anywhere either city or village. If we talk about only cities then the capital city has the higher price than the normal city.
so the people with higher income or business can afford the price but the people who has lower income can't buy the land either in city or village like a labour who can earn only few pounds. So for him its difficult to make a budget to buy home in any area. Because he already suffering with a lot of taxes and home expenses. The people with lower income rent the home and the people with higher income owe the home.
To conclude, the owe home is positive situation according to me because there is no need to pay rent each month. For example, there is 20k rent of a home, a person has the budget of 50k for a month then he will spend whole money for home expenses without paying the rent if he owe the home but if he is living in the rented home then he has to pay 20k for the rent only then he has to arrange more money for his monthly budget.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear opinion in the conclusion: owning a home is positive because it removes monthly rent, and you attempt to explain why income affects whether people can buy or rent. However, the response only partially addresses the question. Much of the discussion describes differences in land prices and who can afford a home, rather than explaining why home ownership is especially important to people in some countries. The positive side is also supported mainly by one example about monthly expenses, with little consideration of other benefits or possible disadvantages. Develop the reasons more directly—for example, security, cultural expectations, or investment—and explain how they support your view.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, moving from location and income to a concluding opinion. The conclusion is identifiable, and the contrast between higher- and lower-income people gives the reader a general line of thought. However, progression is difficult to follow because the opening announces points rather than presenting a clear argument, and the sequence markers “Firstly” and “secondly” do not lead to well-defined paragraphs or developed stages. Several ideas run together, especially the discussion of income, taxes, and expenses. Use separate paragraphs for reasons and your evaluation, and connect each example explicitly to the question. Clearer referencing and more purposeful transitions would make the argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic topic, using relevant terms such as “income,” “rent,” “land prices,” and “monthly budget.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repeated or used inaccurately, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. For example, “owe the home” is used where you mean “own the home,” while “the main thing which concern about” is not a natural way to express the issue. Phrases such as “normal city” and “make a budget to buy home” are also imprecise. Build a more accurate range for discussing housing, affordability, security, and financial commitments, and check collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if he is living in the rented home.” However, sentence structures are limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to read. Examples include “People are living in different areas … have their own home,” “the land prices higher,” and “the people who has lower income,” which show problems with clause construction, missing verbs, and subject–verb agreement. Articles and punctuation also need attention, as in “buy home” and the run-on sentence after “home expenses.” Practise building complete sentences with accurate verb forms, then use full stops to separate ideas and check agreement and articles.
