IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is a common practice among many countries, that people prefer to buy their own home rather than renting one. I think it is due to the unstable economy and infrastructure of some countries, it gets very important for people to own a house. I think such type of situation creates negative situation for people, because they do not have any choice.

Through out the history of man kind, a house is a compulsory thing for survival. It helps them to feel secure in that place from different weather conditions and other harmfull situations. And it is compulsory for people with a family. In many countries the economy is stable and they have a strong system of accountability. In such type of countries it is a common practice among people to rent a house or an apartment. Because law of that country give them a social security in any case of breach of agreement. For example, in many developed countries like USA and China a large fraction of people are living in rental properties.

On the other hand, there are many developing countries where it gets compulsory for people to buy house. Because of weak law enforcement and unstable economy. People fear to risk their families with rental properties. Due to this they do not have any other option, instead of buying a house. For example, in some asian countries like India and Pakistan most of the people have their own houses and others struggle for that. Buying a house costs a large amount of capital that everyone can not afford and some people stuggle throughout their lives to buy a house.

I my opnion, it is a negative situation for people that they do not have any other option than buying a house. All around the world buying a house is financially very challenging and it gets hard for people with no other option. I think people should a have choice, if they want to invest a subsequent amount of money on a house or not.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that weak law enforcement and economic instability can make ownership feel necessary, and you clearly judge this situation negatively because people lack choice and buying is financially demanding. The examples of rental housing in the USA and China, and ownership in India and Pakistan, help illustrate the contrast. This meets the task well, but some reasoning is asserted rather than fully explained: for instance, the link between unstable economies and the need to buy could be clarified, and the country examples are broad generalisations. Develop the causes and consequences more precisely, and explain how security or housing laws influence people’s decisions, to make the discussion more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about the security and rental context, a contrasting paragraph about developing countries, and a conclusion that restates your view. The contrast signalled by “On the other hand” helps readers follow the main argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. Several sentences begin with “Because,” creating fragments and making the reasoning feel choppy, while “In such type of countries” is repeated. The shift from the general importance of shelter to the specific issue of rental security could also be smoother. Use clearer links between cause, example, and consequence, and make references such as “they” unambiguous to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “unstable economy,” “law enforcement,” “rental properties,” “social security,” and “financially challenging.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “compulsory thing for survival,” “risk their families with rental properties,” and “subsequent amount of money.” Spelling errors, including “harmfull,” “stuggle,” and “opnion,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording—for example, describe housing as a basic necessity and say that people fear leaving their families vulnerable to insecure rental arrangements. Proofreading would help make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including explanations with “because” and a conditional idea in “if they want to invest… or not.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some sentence structures are faulty. For example, “I think it is due to the unstable economy… it gets very important” joins two independent clauses with a comma, and “Because of weak law enforcement and unstable economy” is a fragment. There are also errors in agreement and articles, as in “law… give them” and “a house is a compulsory thing.” Work on joining clauses with appropriate punctuation or conjunctions, and check subject–verb agreement and article use. More accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
