IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, owing a home is not easy for everyone but in some countries owing a home is more valuable rather than renting one. This is because financial stability for the people. In my view, this is positive situation rather than negative although when it is financial burden.

Firstly, owing a house gives people financial stability because investing in the owing home is long-term investment for the people. People do not have to worry about landlords asking them to leave a rental home. A person with their own home do not have to stress about their family security. Parents can give a permanent home to their children. In some culture, owing a home is a sign of a success and also makes higher status for people.

I believe it is positive development because owing a home is a good way to invest money and also gives long-term benefits. The property may increases in value over the time and owing a home. Secondly, owners have their freedom to decorates or renovates their homes by their own decisions. People can feel connected to a place when they own something. People may find peace of mind and less worried due to stable financial security. Families can enjoy greater residential stability by owing a home.

On the other side, sometime buying a home can creates financial pressure because of large amounts of loans, payments and maintenance coasts. But it can be solved by proper financial management.

In conclusion, owing a home is more beneficial rather than renting because of a long-term benefits and financial stability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain why ownership matters, citing financial stability, security from landlords, family permanence and social status, and you clearly judge it to be positive despite the financial burden. This meets the task well, and the position is easy to identify. The response also includes relevant supporting points, such as property potentially increasing in value and owners having more freedom over their homes. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that financial pressure “can be solved by proper financial management” needs qualification or a practical explanation, since debt and maintenance costs may not always be manageable. Developing this counterpoint and explaining why ownership is especially valued in some countries would make the discussion more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs explaining the benefits, a counterpoint, and a conclusion. The reader can follow the main progression from reasons for valuing ownership to your positive judgement. Linking phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “On the other side” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical, and ideas within the benefits paragraph are sometimes listed rather than developed in a clear sequence. The sentence “The property may increases in value over the time and owing a home” is incomplete, interrupting the flow. Also, the conclusion repeats the main claim without drawing together the key reasons. Use clearer links between each claim and its explanation, and ensure every sentence contributes a complete step in the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “financial stability,” “long-term investment,” “landlords,” “family security,” “financial pressure,” and “residential stability.” These expressions make your main ideas clear and show some ability to discuss housing beyond basic terms. However, several inaccurate or repetitive choices limit precision. “Owing” is repeatedly used where “owning” is intended, and phrases such as “higher status,” “by their own decisions,” and “maintenance coasts” are not natural or accurate in context. Repetition of “owing a home” also makes the writing less flexible. Aim to use more precise collocations and vary references to home ownership, while checking spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including explanations with “because” and a contrast introduced by “although.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but errors in sentence structure, agreement, and verb forms are noticeable and sometimes make individual sentences difficult to follow. For example, “A person with their own home do not have to stress” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “The property may increases in value … and owing a home” combines an incorrect verb form with an incomplete clause. Other examples include “although when it is financial burden” and “owners have their freedom to decorates.” Practise building complete clauses and checking agreement and verb forms; greater accuracy in these patterns would make your ideas easier to read.
