IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, many people are struggling to own their personal house instead of renting. This is because having a rental home has drawbacks such as security concerns and small and expensive homes regardless of long-term stay. People owning a home might be a positive situation because it resolves these issues and allows a family to stay as long as they want without having any kind of security reasons.

Many rental homes have security problems, such as a lack of locks, and the owner can barge in at any time in the house, disrespecting the family values. Rental home owners have separate keys to the house, which they carry all the time. This disturbs the people residing in a house, and they have to lock themselves in other rooms of the house. Owning a personal home protects the family of a person from this issue, as no one from the outside can disturb them, and they can live freely and easily. Theft problems have also been reduced due to an increase in the security of personal homes.

There is the problem concerning local people regarding the cost of the rental homes. In big cities, a small rental home is so costly that it's difficult for a middle-class person to arrange the amount for rent. In addition, it's really difficult to accommodate a family of five people in a small portion of the house. This creates congestion in the house, leaving no personal privacy. People with their own house do not face such issues because a personal house has all the amenities and space available to facilitate all the family members. For example, a bigger house provides every person with their own room and belongings.

In conclusion, rental homes can be frustrating due to lack of security and a larger amount, but owning a personal home allows everyone to stay freely without facing any kind of problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives reasons for preferring ownership, especially privacy and security, and clearly judges home ownership as positive. The position is consistent from the introduction to the conclusion, and the examples about landlords entering and the cost and size of city rentals make the discussion relevant. This meets the task well, with some development beyond a basic list of reasons. However, the explanation of why ownership is important in some countries is framed mainly through rental disadvantages, and the claim that owning a home provides “all the amenities and space” is broad and not fully supported. To strengthen the response further, explain the underlying importance of ownership, such as stability or investment, and qualify claims that may not apply to every household.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around security and affordability/space, and a concluding statement. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “In addition” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to “rental homes,” “personal home,” and “issues.” Some links between claims are also unclear: the sentence about theft being reduced does not explain how this follows from the preceding discussion of owners’ keys. Referencing in “This disturbs the people” is understandable but could identify the specific situation more precisely. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make cause-and-effect links explicit to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, and terms such as “security concerns,” “middle-class,” “accommodate,” and “congestion” show some range. Meaning is generally clear, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural, which limits the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary. For example, “rental home owners” appears to mean landlords, while “a larger amount” is vague when discussing rent. Phrases such as “security reasons” and “personal home” are repeated and do not always express the intended meaning naturally. Aim for more precise housing-related collocations and vary repeated wording; this would make the argument clearer and more fluent without changing its ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a small rental home is so costly that it’s difficult…” and a subordinate clause beginning “because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. In “the owner can barge in at any time in the house,” the placement of the time and place phrases is problematic; “at any time” should be positioned more naturally. “Owning a personal home protects the family of a person” also shows awkward noun-phrase construction, and “a larger amount” lacks a clear grammatical complement in context. Review article use, phrase structure, and punctuation around longer sentences, while continuing to practise varied complex forms.
