IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many nation it is crucial for people to have their own home rather than living as a tenant because tenancy have much more formalities and highly cost effective. I believe it is a positive situation that enables you to have a ownership.

To commence with, it is a significant for people in different countries because owning a home makes easier for people to live without restriction. For example, in India, as a owner of the home, individual can hang out and come home lately at night, therefore no one can intervene and ask questions. Moreover, people can access their own roof where they can freely walk and enjoy at night, and sometimes they can dry their clothes in the sunlight.

On the other hand, people think to have a own home instead of living on rent, due to the unnecessary conditions of the landlord. For instance, people who rent a property needs to sign an agreement first, to fulfill all the requirements, such as maintenance of the property will be deduct from the rent amount and early entry at night. Whereas, people who own a home can customize according their preference.

In conclusion, people prefer to have their own home to live their life without any interference and it is a long term investment instead of living as tenant and fulfilling the rent deeds. It is a favorable condition in terms of ownership of home and property than paying a high amount of money as a rent for many years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership offers freedom from landlords’ rules and state that you view this as positive. Examples such as being able to return home late or customize a property help explain why ownership matters. However, the reasons are narrow and some are not clearly explained; the example about drying clothes on a roof, for instance, does not establish why owning a home is especially important. The claim that renting involves “highly cost effective” formalities is also unclear, and the conclusion introduces long-term investment without developing it in the body. Develop a broader reason, such as security or financial stability, and explain how it supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the reader can generally follow the main point. Paragraphs are organised around freedom from restrictions and landlords’ conditions. However, progression within the paragraphs is uneven: the first body paragraph moves from returning late to using a roof and drying clothes without showing how these examples connect. Linking phrases such as “To commence with,” “Moreover,” and “On the other hand” are used, but the contrast signalled by “On the other hand” is not fully clear because the paragraph continues the case for ownership. Use topic sentences that state each reason, then develop it with a closely related explanation and example; make transitions reflect the actual relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “tenant,” “landlord,” “agreement,” “customize,” and “long term investment.” This gives you enough language to communicate the general argument. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “highly cost effective” to describe tenancy formalities, “early entry at night,” and “rent deeds.” Repetition of “own home” and “people” also makes the expression less flexible. Aim for precise phrases that fit the intended meaning, such as “rental conditions,” “return home late,” and “rental agreement,” and vary references to homeowners and tenants. Check word forms and natural collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “whereas,” and “therefore.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “In many nation,” “tenancy have,” “makes easier for people,” and “people who rent a property needs,” which show problems with plural forms, agreement, and sentence construction. Articles are also often missing or incorrect, as in “as a owner” and “have a own home.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, correct agreement, and appropriate articles. Build accuracy in shorter sentences before adding more complex clauses.
