IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some countries, having own house rather than staying in a rented house is very significant for individuals. I believe that both have their own advantages and disadvantages. For people who can afford to buy a house prefer living in their own home because it protects their privacy and helps them to live independently. Moreover, individuals who cannot afford to own a house prefer living in a rented house because it provide them a shelter to survive and live their life.
The one major advantage of living in our own house is that people have independence of living their life and make decisions independently. This is because, unlike rented homes, individuals need to follow rules and regulations given by the owner of house to live in their home and they cannot make do anything against these rules but when people have their own houses, they have the independence of living their lifes how they want to live. Moreover, owning a house protect their privacy. For instance, people who wants to live independently will definately intent to own a house to avoid being restricted for making decisions independently. As a result, they live a happy, protected and peaceful life by independently making decisions and living as they want to live without any restrictions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify a relevant reason for home ownership—privacy and independence—and explain how renting may involve following a landlord’s rules. However, the response addresses the task only partially: it does not clearly decide whether the importance placed on owning a home is positive or negative. The opening says both options have advantages and disadvantages, which does not answer that evaluative question, and the discussion of why ownership matters is narrow and repetitive. The point that renting provides shelter is mentioned but not developed. The response also falls 38 words short of the required minimum, leaving too little space to explain the reasons and support a clear overall judgement. Develop both parts of the prompt and state your position directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to a paragraph about the benefits of owning a home. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “As a result” help show relationships between points. However, there is no clear overall progression: the first paragraph introduces both ownership and renting, while the main paragraph repeats independence and privacy without developing a distinct sequence of ideas. The second paragraph also ends without a conclusion that answers whether this situation is positive or negative. Some connections feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “independently.” Organise the response around the two questions—reasons for the preference, then your evaluation—and use a concluding sentence to bring the argument together.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “privacy,” “rules and regulations,” “shelter,” and “restrictions.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or unnatural, which makes the expression less precise. For example, “living their life” and “living their lifes” recur, while “make do anything against these rules” does not clearly express the intended meaning. There are also spelling and word-form errors, such as “definately” and “intent.” Aim for more accurate collocations and vary the language used to describe autonomy and housing choices. More precise vocabulary would help you explain the reasons and evaluate the situation without repeating the same terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “unlike rented homes” and a cause-and-effect structure beginning “This is because.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect accuracy. For example, “it provide them” should use a verb agreeing with “it,” and “owning a house protect” needs a singular verb form. The sentence beginning “For people who can afford to buy a house prefer…” is also structurally incomplete because it combines an introductory phrase with a main clause that lacks a clear subject. Practise building complete clauses and checking subject–verb agreement, while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
