IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some countries people prefer to own a home rather than to be a tenants. In my opinion, renting a home is better than owning a home becuase there are several things which are linked to own a home like finanical burden and the cost of repair moreover, this essay covers the negative impacts of owning a home with examples.
One of the biggest problem to own a home in now a days is th eprice of property which is sky rocketing people even do savings for there whole life even then they wouldnot be able to buy a home because the price of propoerty is increasing day by day therefore, most people bank finance the home and rest of there life is going to pay the instalment. For eample, there is friend of mine who took a loan from bank to and then bought a home intially the markup rate was 14% and he took a plan of 20% but after 5 years the interest rate was revised by governmnet and now his markup rate is around 20% and the major chunk of his salary is going in installments. So, now he is very upset how to manage his finances.
Secondly, when you own a home after sometime there are many problems which you have a face for example, the repair of plumming, white wash of interior and exterior the repair of electrican items which will become sometime a high cost and this cost is recurring you have to renovate things periodically. But that is not the case in renting these cost are the responsibility of the owner.
To conclude it, renting a home is way better than owning it you can easily manage your expenses with your salary buy consider a home where the rent donot take your salary's major chunk moreover, the cost of repair of different things are the responsibilty of owner you donot even worry about the sudden repairs which happens and sometime costs alot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
Your position is clear: you consider renting preferable, and you give two relevant reasons—financial pressure from buying and the owner’s responsibility for repairs. The personal example about a loan and rising interest rates also helps illustrate the first reason. However, the task asks why home ownership is important in some countries, and this part is not really answered; the essay mainly argues against owning. The discussion of repairs is also brief, while the loan example is difficult to follow because the figures and repayment plan are not clearly explained. Address both questions directly: explain possible reasons people value ownership, such as security or cultural expectations, then assess whether this is positive or negative with more fully developed support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas generally follow a sensible order: financial costs are discussed first, followed by maintenance responsibilities. Linking expressions such as “One of the biggest problem,” “Secondly” and “To conclude” help signal this progression. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly the long first body paragraph, where several points run together and the example’s details are hard to track. The introduction also promises examples without clearly mapping the essay’s argument. Use clearer sentence boundaries and organise each paragraph around one main point, followed by explanation and a concise example. More precise referencing would also help readers follow who pays for repairs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial burden,” “interest rate,” “instalment,” “salary” and “renovate.” These terms allow you to discuss housing costs and maintenance, and the meaning is usually recoverable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “bank finance the home,” “white wash of interior and exterior” and “major chunk.” Spelling errors—including “propoerty,” “plumming” and “responsibilty”—also make the writing less controlled. Build a more precise set of housing-related expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, use “take out a mortgage,” “interior and exterior repainting,” and “a substantial proportion of his salary” in place of the less natural phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which” and “when,” so there is some variety. However, complex sentences are often not controlled, and frequent errors sometimes make the reader work to understand the meaning. Examples include “prefer to own a home rather than to be a tenants,” “One of the biggest problem,” and “there are many problems which you have a face.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also problematic: the opening of the first body paragraph joins several independent ideas without clear stops. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, verb patterns and sentence boundaries. Breaking long sentences into shorter units, then checking each clause for a clear subject and verb, would improve accuracy and readability.
