IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Being an owner of a house is considered more important than living in a rented place by many people around the globe. In my opinion, it is largely a positive development as owning a home can provide a sense of security and act as an asset at the same time.

Many people prefer buying a house as it brings mental satisfaction. Living in a rented place can mean that you might have to change your home after a certain time period. It can cause a great amount of stress for the whole family as moving from one place to another can be a traumatic experience for young ones. But if people know that they are the owner of their place then they do not have to worry about this aspect. Consequently, their relationship with neighbors will improve and they will have a community to get support from in the difficult time.

Another positive aspect of being an owner of a house is that you unintentionally create a long-term asset for your family. Real estate prices tend to rise over time, which essentially means that the value of the property can increase many times when people reach their retirement age. This provides them a chance to sell it and live comfortably for the rest of their life or pass it on to their children and can act as a stabilizing agent during their initial professional years.

In conclusion, although there can be some drawbacks but having own home usually is a positive development as it brings peace and happiness for the family while being a wealth generation tool in the long-term.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your response addresses both parts of the prompt: you explain why home ownership matters, citing stability for families and the possibility of building an asset, and you clearly judge it to be largely positive. The two body paragraphs extend these reasons with relevant consequences, such as reduced stress from moving and financial security in retirement. This clear position and supporting explanation fit the band descriptor. To strengthen the response further, qualify broad claims—for example, that property values “tend to rise over time”—and develop the financial argument with a little more explanation of possible conditions or limitations. The drawbacks are acknowledged only briefly in the conclusion, so a more specific consideration of them would make the evaluation more balanced and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, each body paragraph develops a separate reason, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Paragraphing is appropriate, and linking expressions such as “Consequently,” “Another positive aspect,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This is a logical and coherent structure. Some connections could be made more precise, however. The move from owning a home to improved relationships with neighbours is plausible but needs an explicit explanation of how stability enables those relationships. The final sentence also combines several ideas—peace, happiness, and wealth generation—without showing their relationship as clearly as the body paragraphs do. Use cohesive devices flexibly, but ensure each link reflects the logic between the ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss housing, family stability, and finances, including “mental satisfaction,” “long-term asset,” “retirement age,” and “stabilizing agent.” These choices show some awareness of more formal language, and the meaning remains clear throughout. At times, however, phrasing is imprecise or not fully natural: “being an owner of a house,” “a certain time period,” and “wealth generation tool” could be expressed more idiomatically. “Traumatic experience” may also overstate the likely effect of moving in this context. Greater precision in collocations and a wider range of natural alternatives would add flexibility and help the vocabulary sound more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a variety of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “as,” “which,” and “although,” and many sentences are controlled well enough to communicate your ideas clearly. For example, “Real estate prices tend to rise over time, which essentially means…” shows an effective attempt to connect a claim with its consequence. A few grammatical issues remain. In “although there can be some drawbacks but,” the two contrasting structures are used together; remove “but.” In “having own home,” a determiner is needed, and “in the difficult time” needs a plural or a different construction. The long sentence beginning “This provides them a chance…” also needs clearer parallel structure. Editing these points would make your otherwise varied grammar more consistently accurate.
