IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, owning a home has been essential part of life to many individuals rather than renting a house. I largely agree as owning a house gives a sense of accomplishment and belonging, however it might not have positive impact. In this essay, we will discuss about reasons behind it and it's outcomes.

It could be argued that owning a home represents as a symbol of achievement. Although renting a property might be cheaper but individuals spends their life saving to buy their own property. Owning a house gives them the freedom to choose their interior designs, and layout of their house. Individuals could have less stress of getting evicted and moving to different property after end of each lease term. And moving house is one of the most stressful situation where it costs extensive amount of time and money. By having own property, these stress are eradicated.

However, it is not always a positive situation. Building more houses could have detrimental impact on ecosystem. As the number of homes increase, there would be demand for more facilities and amenities like road, electricity and waste management. Furthermore, the cost of resources to build a house will also increase resulting in increased cost of living. Not only that, many individual would not be able to afford a house as the demand is high and the supply is low, which has a negative impact on the economy.

In conculsion, as owning a property is very important for many individuals as it gives the freedom and sense of belonging, it might not always have a positive impact in the environment and economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why home ownership matters, citing achievement, control over interior design, and security from eviction or repeated moves, then discuss possible environmental and economic drawbacks. Your overall view—that ownership offers benefits but is not always positive—is clear in the introduction and conclusion. This is a relevant response, but some ideas are less fully developed than others. For example, the environmental point moves from building more homes to pressure on amenities without clearly explaining how this relates to the importance people place on owning a home. The claim that high demand and low supply harm the economy also needs a more specific explanation. Develop these links and support the main reasons with clearer examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. The progression from security and personal choice to wider environmental and economic concerns is easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “However” and “In conclusion” to guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “And moving house…” begins a sentence with a connector that does not show the relationship precisely, while “Not only that” adds a point without a clear parallel structure. The introduction’s “we will discuss” framing is also unnecessary. Use more precise transitions and connect each consequence explicitly to the preceding claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “sense of accomplishment,” “evicted,” “detrimental impact,” and “cost of living.” These choices help communicate both personal and wider consequences, and some less common expressions are attempted. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “represents as a symbol,” “individuals spends their life saving,” and “extensive amount of time and money.” There are also spelling errors, including “conculsion,” and imprecise phrasing such as “these stress are eradicated.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on accurate collocations and check spelling, especially in the final draft.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession with “Although” and a conditional construction with “as the number of homes increase.” The meaning is generally clear, and the response includes some sentence variety. However, some grammatical errors remain. For example, “an essential part” needs an article, “individuals spends” has subject–verb disagreement, and “after end of each lease term” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “Although renting a property might be cheaper but…” incorrectly combines two contrasting structures, while “these stress are” has a number-agreement error. Review articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, and avoid joining “although” and “but” in the same clause. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
