IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The trend in most of the regions of the world to owning a home rather then renting it is a curcial aspect for people, this is a controversial issue. In this essay i will discuss both sides before reaching a conclusion, also give reasons why i strongly support to owning a house is vital.

The positive aspects of owning a house is that it would not economically burdanize a family. For instance, a family which have limited resources, they can use their income on any other expenditure instead of pay the rent of their apartment. Another positive aspect is that if ones had their own home so they can design, and renovate it according to their will.

On the other side, there is no fault of renting a house as the families who shifted from rural to urban centres, in search of better career opportunities, if they rent a house or apartment so that they could live easily. In this case, by renting a house would bebeficial for themselves to earn their livelihood than living in a village. As well as renting will economically burdanize them as it will be an extra expenditure than their daily lives.

I believe that, owning ones house is much beneficilal than renting ones as personal belonging is accessible and free of cost

To conclude, as both have their positive aspects like, they can redesign their houses in accordance to their will, and renting would economically burdanize them. The disadvantages of own house that they could not move ahead no matter which extend better chances they have. The negative aspects of renting a house would economically burdanize one, can not be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both parts of the prompt by giving reasons for home ownership and stating that you consider it preferable to renting. The points about being able to renovate a home and the flexibility renting offers people who move for work are relevant. However, the reasons why ownership is important are not clearly explained: the claim that it would not burden a family financially is then contradicted by the suggestion that renting allows families to spend income elsewhere. Your position is also difficult to follow because the conclusion introduces disadvantages of both options without clearly resolving the comparison. Develop a consistent explanation of why ownership matters in these countries, and support your view with clearer, more specific reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, separate discussion of ownership and renting, and a conclusion, so there is some visible organisation. You also use signposts such as “For instance,” “On the other side,” and “To conclude.” However, the overall progression is unclear: the first body paragraph presents ownership as financially beneficial, while the next says renting is beneficial but also financially burdensome. Some links between ideas are awkward or incomplete, particularly the long sentence beginning “On the other side” and the conclusion’s list of points. The opening promises to discuss both sides, but the paragraphs do not develop a balanced, clearly connected comparison. Use one main idea per paragraph and make each linking phrase express the relationship between ideas accurately.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “career opportunities,” “expenditure,” “renovate,” and “livelihood.” This gives you a basic range for discussing housing and work. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning harder to follow, as in “curcial,” “burdanize,” “bebeficial,” and “beneficilal.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “personal belonging is accessible and free of cost” and “no matter which extend better chances they have.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than more complicated wording. For example, explain that ownership can provide “financial security” or “a sense of stability,” and describe renting as “a practical option for people who relocate for work.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “which,” “as,” and “if.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “a family which have limited resources, they can use their income” has faulty agreement and sentence construction; “if ones had their own home so they can design” has an unclear conditional form; and “owning ones house is much beneficilal than renting ones” lacks a clear grammatical comparison. There are also recurring problems with articles, plurals, and punctuation, such as the comma splice in the opening. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check agreement and sentence boundaries.
